Divya Mahajan Makes India Proud, Becomes World’s Youngest Female to Swim Across the North Channel
At an age when most teenagers are navigating school, friends and everyday challenges, 16-year-old Divya Mahajan was battling freezing seas and powerful currents. The Nashik teenager has created history by becoming the youngest person ever to swim across the North Channel, completing the daunting crossing in 15 hours and 50 minutes on August 23, 2026.Her achievement also shattered the previous age record set by Indian swimmer Anshuman Jhingran, who completed the challenge in 2023 at the age of 19.Nearly 16 Hours in Freezing WatersDivya began her historic swim at 6:10 am from Donaghadee in Northern Ireland. Nearly 16 hours later, at around 10 pm, she reached Portpatrick in Scotland. But the journey was anything but easy. The North Channel, also known as the Irish Channel, is considered one of the most demanding open-water swimming challenges. Water temperatures can remain between 12°C and 15°C even during summer, while strong currents, rough seas and unpredictable weather can turn the crossing into a formidable test of endurance.Divya had another challenge—she was not allowed to wear a wetsuit. Only a standard swimsuit extending no below the knees or above the shoulders was permitted. She trained for months, arriving in Europe well ahead of the attempt and swimming for up to four hours every day to prepare her body for the extreme conditions.Mission Sapt SagarDivya has named her ambitious journey ‘Mission Sapt Sagar’. The North Channel is already her second major solo channel crossing. Earlier, she completed the 34-km Catalina Channel swim in California in 15 hours and 23 minutes, becoming the youngest Indian swimmer at 15 to accomplish the feat. Her ultimate ambition is even bigger: becoming the youngest person in the world to complete the Oceans Seven Challenge before turning 19. But Divya’s dreams extend beyond records. She wants her journey to encourage young girls to challenge limitations and pursue their passions in education and sport.A Family of Extraordinary AchieversBehind Divya’s remarkable journey stands a family equally familiar with endurance and adventure. Her father, Dr Hitendra Mahajan, is an anaesthetist who has climbed Mount Everest and finished on the podium in the Race Across America. Her mother, Dr Anjana Mahajan, supports her nutrition and expedition logistics, while her brother Om Mahajan is a Guinness World Record-holding ultra-endurance cyclist. At 15, Divya has already crossed one of the world’s toughest channels. But for this young swimmer, the biggest waves—and biggest dreams—are still ahead.
