Mansukhbhai Raghavjibhai Prajapati from Gujarat is a down to earth man with an immense interest in pottery which has also been the family’s occupation for many years. As he was growing up, he developed an interest in making clay pots and wanted to lend a hand in the family business. However, his father who knew the hardships of this profession insisted that Prajapati should learn carpentry.

Prajapati, who meddled with carpentry for a while found his true calling in pottery and returned to help his family business, much to the disappointment of his father who wanted him to become a carpenter.

New Technology

Prajapati wanted to modernize the whole process of making clay pots and pans. With his determination, he was able to procure Rs 30,000 and he dedicated his time and energy in developing a machine that could make tawa (pans). After unsuccessful attempts with nearly one and a half lakh tawas, he finally got the breakthrough technology. While a whole family of potters was making just about 80-100 tawas in a day Prajapati could make around 4000 tawas. This motivated him to try more such things from clay and he went on to make earthen dinner sets, cookers, filters and even spoons and glasses. In fact, he successfully made nearly all kitchen apparatus and appliances with clay.

Earthen Refrigerator

It is the dream of every household to have a fridge. However, economically weaker sections are unable to pay even their electricity bills. Prajapati used his pottery skills to make a clay refrigerator that worked without electricity and was easy on the pocket as well. All one has to do is fill a compartment of the clay fridge with water. Fruits and vegetables remain fresh in it for seven days.  A family even replaced their electric fridge with the clay one and are reaping the benefits. Besides, the clay fridge is also good for the environment.

Mansukhbhi Prajapati passionately and successfully harnessed the vast potential of soil and transformed himself from a poor potter to a successful entrepreneur who is the founder of Mitticool. He has won numerous awards and accolades, but the icing of the cake was when former President  Abdul Kalam named him as a “true scientist” for his marvelous inventions.
