Murlikant Petkar made India proud when he won an individual gold medal at the 1972 Summer Paralympics, in Heidelberg, Germany and became India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. He set a world record in the 50 m freestyle swimming event, at 37.33 seconds. In the same games, he participated in javelin, precision javelin throw and slalom and reached the finals.
The swimmer got 'official' recognition of his achievement after 45 years when he was conferred with Padma Shri according to the list announced by the government on Thursday. The army man was injured by seven bullets by Pakistani fighter planes that paralyzed the lower half of his body. He was a good boxer as well, but after his injury, he took to swimming and won many medals,
