Punita Arora is the first woman in India to don the second highest rank i.e. Lieutenant General of Indian Armed Forces and the first female Vice-admiral of Indian Navy. Before becoming Vice Admiral of Indian Navy she took the charge of the commandant of Armed Forces Medical College in 2004 thereafter becoming the first woman officer to command the medical college. She later moved from Army to the Navy.
Punita Arora is also a gynaecologist. She was awarded Sena Medal by President of India for establishing Gynae Endoscopy and Oncology facilities in Armed Forces Hospitals.
The President of India awarded her the Vishisht Seva Medal for the efficient and prompt treatment provided to the victims of Kalu Chak terrorist attack, under her leadership while commanding Military Hospital, Jammu.
