C. Sheeja, 33 is a resilient woman with a heart of steel who decided to take up her husband Jayakumar’s profession of toddy tapping when he, unfortunately, met with a road accident. The couple was devastated after the accident as Jayakumar could no longer climb trees owing to the injury and they were finding it tough to make ends meet.
That is when Sheeja who hails from Kannur district in Kerala decided to take up men’s vocation of toddy tapping. She learned to climb a coconut tree and tap the sap from the flower to extract toddy.
Sheeja’s husband was reluctant to allow her to do this physically strenuous job at dizzying heights, but seeing her confidence and determination, he finally relented. Initially, he chose the shorter trees to teach her the technique of climbing. Jayakumar said that it was very difficult for her in the beginning, so much that even they thought of giving up. However, Sheeja persevered with her training and there came a day when she could effortlessly climb a tree.
Sheeja had to face social stigma, yet she paid no heed and continued with her work. She climbs eight palm trees a day to earn ₹350. After she completes the day’s tapping work, she does other jobs like rubber tapping and sometimes works under the job guarantee scheme.
Sheeja’s brother had died after falling from a coconut tree. Yet, Sheeja remained resolute and undeterred. She trained herself hard to take on this daunting task and is now able to support herself and her family. Hats off to Sheeja for overcoming her fears and social stigma to become independent and self-reliant.
