Sonam Wangchuk is an engineer, innovator and education reformist who aims for excellence with his out of the box thinking. He is known for his invention of the Ice Stupa technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water in form of conically shaped ice heap.
He is the founder-director of the Student’s Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) which is an eco-friendly school working on reforming the government school system. He has initiated an educational project he had been campaigning for the last 25 years: an alternative university for the mountains called the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).
