From a very young age, Aparna had an immense interest in art and craft. She could turn any insignificant thing into beautiful decorative articles. Once she had started making her own jewelry and distributed among her friends and teachers. As demand for her jewelry grew, she even began to sell it online. Aparna says that she got her talent from her mother who has no training in craft, yet can transform anything into decorative articles.
Aparna who is in her early twenties is studying B.Ed. in a college in Kollam. She has to travel 28 km daily from her home to Kollam and she noticed that there are many bottles lying ashore the Ashtamudi lake that falls in the way. Some bottles were clean and caught her attention. Soon she started bringing the bottles home and after cleaning them, she would transform them into beautiful pieces of art by drawing and painting on them.
Soon her bottles also became popular and there was a market for them too, not only from Kerala but also from other states. She began a social media page, ‘Quppi’ for the bottle craft that she created. She never imagined to become an entrepreneur, all she wanted to do was make decorative art from the waste and discarded bottles which inadvertently led to the cleaning up of lake Ashtamudi with the help of few friends and the local people who supported her work.
Aparna aspires to become a teacher and pursue her passion for the craft at the same time.
