When 14-year-old Rifath Sharook toyed the idea of sending a student satellite to space, he got wholehearted support from Srimathy Kesan, founder-CEO of space kidz India, but first, they needed a team. Tanishq Dwivedi, Yagna Sai and Mohammad Abdul Kashif, all 17-year-olds learned about the project at Space Kidz and signed up for it.
Their first project was the SKI-NSLV Kalam 1 which a balloon satellite which they launched successfully. Around this time an aerospace engineering student, Vinay Bharadwaj from Bengaluru was introduced to the team followed by Gobinath, a biologist. The team worked hard for four years and finally the KalamSat, the world’s lightest satellite was launched successfully.
The satellite will be able to study behaviour and performance in microgravity. It will also study seeds and explain more about space agriculture.
