The National Environment Science Academy, New Delhi has conferred the "Junior Scientist of the Year (2017) Award" on Ashok Kumar Dhakad, Assistant tree breeder, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for his outstanding contribution to forest breeding, biotechnology, genetic conservation and management of natural resources. Rajiv Sharma, Secretary, Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India presented the award to Dhakad.
Dhakad for the first time reported the DNA and gene sequencing of several Indian endemic species. He has He has also worked on developing barcodes of endangered and endemic Indian forest tree species and their molecular identification with their evolutionary relationship.
