The freshness of a cup of tea rejuvenates our mornings. Most of us have our preferences when it comes to the aromatic beverage. Some cannot do without their homemade teas while some make it a point to have it from their favourite tea stall. In every city, there is a fabled chai wala whose cup of hot tea has become the talk of the town. Similarly, Gulab Ji Chai in Jaipur is quite famous in the city, not just for the chai that it sells but, also for some other reasons.
94-year-old Gulabji started his tea stall in 1947 and even today he serves a glass of tea to his customers with a jovial face. Apart from running his business, he is also known for his giving nature.
If you ever visit Gulabji’s tea stall at 6 am you’ll see a huge crowd waiting to have a sip of his awesome glass of tea. Along with his daily customers, he also serves almost 200 to 250 beggars too with free tea and bread. He makes sure no one leaves his stall with an empty stomach.
Gulabji started with his business with a minimal amount of Rs 130 and not everyone was happy about it. In a conversation with Curly Tales about the same, he said: “I started with a small cart in 1947, I come from a Rajput family & when I first opened a chai stall not everyone appreciated the act. They used to often keep a distance with me saying that this is not good work and now they all are loving it!”
Gulabji’s enthusiasm has made us realize that our age cannot define us and our urge to stand strong will make our journey worthwhile. We at My Indian Dream are inspired by Gulabji’s determination.
