The Jammu Mandal Praja Parishad School in Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh used to face huge dropouts. The major reason behind the dropouts was that children didn’t have proper transport facilities. Vizianagaram is a place where there is a maximum number of migrants who leave early for work and their children are left under the care of the elders. The senior citizens, some of whom are weak themselves are unable to help their grandchildren reach school.
Taking stock of the situation the headmaster of the school Mantri Rammohana Rao arranged one auto-rickshaw for the safe transport of kids from their homes in nearby villages and colonies to the school and back. He pays Rs 4,500 from his pocket but ensures the continuation of the student’s education. Owing to him, 30 students who had earlier dropped out have returned and the school now has a decent strength of 120 students.
However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. When the school was in a dilapidated condition after being hit by a cyclone five years ago, Rammohana Rao didn't wait for the government’s help. Instead, he approached the residents and his alumni and with the donated amount, the school’s compound wall and other infrastructure were rebuilt.
Rammohana Rao also arranged for Western-style toilets to be constructed for the convenience of physically challenged students. Adhering to the Swacch Bharat programme, he banned plastic in school. The school abounds with greenery due to his persistent efforts. The headmaster made it mandatory for every child t adopt a sapling and look after it.
Rammohana Rao sincerely cared for the health of his students. A healthy breakfast is served daily at 7:30 am. Speaking to The Hindu, Rammohana Rao said, “We don’t allow kids to eat junk and packaged food. Healthy snacks are provided during the interval with the support of teachers, parents and philanthropists. Our aim is to see healthy growth in their body as the majority of them don’t get direct care from parents who migrated to cities in search of livelihood,”
He was awarded the State Best Teacher Award in the year 2018 for his dedication towards the school and its students. He was also presented with the Harita Award and Swacha Vidyalaya Award for ensuring the overall performance of the school.
