G V Dasarathi, a mechanical engineer became conscious about the adverse effects of development on the environment when his daughter was afflicted by acute asthma. He realized that unless he didn’t take steps to bring a change, he couldn’t expect the same from others. He immediately sold his car and began cycling to work.
In his effort to reduce his carbon footprint, Dasarathi went on to build a unique home in Bengaluru which is totally made from waste. Apart from kicking the CO2 habit, the home was built at half the cost of a traditional one.
Dasarathi has given an account of all the learnings of years of dedicated environmentalism in his blog , Low Carbon Life. As mentioned in his blog, parts of the house, such as the windows, staircase, kitchen cupboards, bookshelves were created from discarded pinewood packing cases that were polished using linseed oil. Other important accessories like bathroom fittings, kitchen sinks, and even glass windows were taken from demolished buildings.
The structure also houses a 20,000-litre tank for rainwater harvesting. It sets an example of how one can live in an environmentally conscious and sustainable manner even in booming cities. His blog gives the required information about people from whom you could source the materials and the process by which such discarded materials could be incorporated in the house.
This unique, one of a kind house sets an example of how we can protect our environment by adopting the motto ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink’.
