"Dream, Dream, Dream! Conduct these dreams into thoughts, and then transform them into action."

Every woman has a dream of achieving something in her own rights. There are many who have surpassed each odd to be at a much better place but, what about the ones who are living under someone’s thumb and their desires are dying with every passing day? Even today women go through female foeticide and child marriages are practised in many parts of India. Several voices are being raised for them and Meri Zindagi, India’s first female mission band from Uttar Pradesh is doing it in an unconventional way.
Founded by Jaya Tiwari, Meri Zindagi is an all-women rock band which focuses on subjects such as female foeticide, gender justice, domestic violence, and other social issues. And through their songs, they try to reach out to people and tell them how important the presence of women is in our society.
One of their songs, O Maai Ri Le Chal Wahi is about a conversation between a mother and a daughter where the latter asks her mom not to get her married. Meri Zindagi has composed several songs and the lyrics of each one of them has the ability to alter thoughts. They have even composed jingles for UP Mahila Police and Women Power Line 1090.
The all-women rock band came into inception in 2010 and it wasn’t easy for them to stand out at first but, today people swing to their beats and hum their lyrics. While talking to The Hindu, Jaya who is also the lead singer and lyricist of the band spoke about how they try to put forward the condition of women in our society through their songs as she said: “One in every five girls in Uttar Pradesh is a child bride. Once married, her aspirations and dreams die. So through our songs, we question this practice. This way it doesn’t anger anyone. We find the audience is interactive and claps and sings along. Many come after the performance to appreciate our lyrics and music.”
The very first member of the rock band to audition was Niharika, she plays the synthesizer. Another member is Saubhagya who plays the percussion while Poorvi is the guitarist and Anamika is the drummer.
Several women in India have a dream to achieve a goal that was set by them since childhood, and it's not right on society’s part to shatter those dreams. Meri Zindagi’s heart-wrenching songs on such women have the power to change many mindsets and we hope they reach out to more people by being the voice of the voiceless.
