Breakthroughs in Brain Injury: Harnessing Light for Healing!

The ability of various wavelengths of light to heal wounds has been researched for many years. According to a recent study published in the journal Radiology, which is published by the Radiological Society of North America, individuals who have experienced substantial brain injuries may benefit from low-level light treatment in terms of their brain's ability to repair. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital treated 38 patients with moderate traumatic brain injury—a brain injury severe enough to affect cognition or show up on a brain scan—using low-level light therapy. Within 72 hours of their injuries, all of them underwent light therapy using a near-infrared light-emitting helmet. It's also unclear exactly how light treatment affects the brain and how exactly. According to Dr. Gupta, prior studies suggest that an enzyme in the mitochondria—often referred to as the "powerhouse" inside each cell—may have changed. Adenosine triphosphate, a chemical that stores and transports energy within cells, is produced in greater quantities as a result of this. Light treatment is also associated with blood vessel dilation and anti-inflammatory benefits. The study's 810-nanometer wavelength of light is already being used for several medical purposes. India Successfully Tests Indigenous VSHORADS Missile System, Enhancing Air Defence Capabilities

India has achieved a significant milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful testing of its indigenous Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile. Enhancing Air Defence Capabilities The VSHORADS missile system, designed to neutralize hostile aircraft, drones, and helicopters at very short ranges, underwent two successful tests on Wednesday and Thursday. These tests were carried out at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, off the Odisha coast. The missiles, launched from a ground-based portable launcher, demonstrated their capability to intercept and destroy high-speed unmanned aerial targets under various interception scenarios. Indigenous Development and Collaboration The VSHORADS missile system is the result of collaborative efforts between the DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), other DRDO laboratories, and Indian industry partners. It incorporates several innovative technologies, including miniaturized reaction control systems and integrated avionics, which have been proven successful during the tests. The Igla-S MANPADS, with its longer interception range of up to 6 kilometers, provides an improved variant compared to the existing Igla-1M systems. Breakthrough Pill by Tata Institute Shows Promise in Preventing Cancer Recurrence

The Tata Institute in Mumbai, India's foremost cancer research and treatment institution, claims to have developed a medication that can prevent cancer from returning. The institute's researchers and clinicians toiled for ten years to produce a pill that they believe can prevent cancer from recurring in patients and lessen the negative effects of therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy by 50 percent. Dr. Rajendra Badve, a top cancer surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital and member of the study group, told NDTV that human cancer cells were implanted in rats, resulting in a tumor. The rats were subsequently subjected to radiation treatment, chemotherapy, and surgery. It was discovered that when cancer cells die, they split into microscopic bits known as chromatin particles. These particles can move to other regions of the body via the circulation, and if they reach healthy cells, they can cause cancer." The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) discovered that dying cancer cells produce cell-free chromatin particles (cfChPs, or chromosomal fragments), which can transform healthy cells into malignant ones. Some of the cfChPs may merge with healthy chromosomes, resulting in new malignancies. "To find a solution to this problem, doctors gave pro-oxidant tablets with resveratrol and copper (R+Cu) to the rats," the doctor told NDTV. The R+Cu reaction produces oxygen radicals, which degrade chromium particles. When taken orally, 'R+Cu' produces oxygen radicals in the stomach, which are swiftly absorbed and reach the bloodstream. The oxygen radicals kill cfChPs released into the bloodstream, preventing ' metastases' - the transfer of cancer cells from one area of the body to another. The researchers stated that R+Cu inhibits chemotherapy toxicity. The researchers in their presentation called it the "Magic of R+Cu"~ This pill reduces the negative effects of cancer treatment therapy by approximately 50%, and it is also approximately 30% effective in cancer prevention. It is also effective against pancreatic, lung, and oral cancer. "Tata physicians have been working on this tablet for over a decade. The pill is pending certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). TIFR scientists have asked the FSSAI to approve this tablet. After receiving permission, it will be accessible in the market from June to July. This pill will significantly improve cancer treatment," the renowned cancer surgeon stated. "While the budget for the treatment ranges from lakhs to crores, this tablet will be available everywhere for just ₹ 100," said Mr. Singh. It targets Gram-negative bacteria, which have shown resilience against traditional antibiotics for the past 50 years. Zosurabalpin disrupts the transportation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a toxic substance that forms the protective shell of Gram-negative bacteria. Tuberculosis, caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affects the lungs and remains one of the world's leading infectious killers, claiming the lives of 1.5 million people annually. The study focused on the host protein nuclear receptor corepressor-1 (NCoR1), which plays a crucial role in controlling the growth of TB in lung myeloid cells by regulating their ability to eliminate the bacteria. The researchers observed that the expression of NCoR1 is compromised during active tuberculosis infection, but is restored with prolonged anti-mycobacterial therapy. Unwavering Courage: The Nurse Who Battled the Tsunami to Save Lives and Transform a Tribe

In 2004, when the devastating tsunami struck the Andaman coast, Shanti Teresa Lakra was already a nurse stationed at the sub-centre in Dugong Creek, a remote area of Little Andaman. Despite the formidable challenges posed by the disaster, Lakra dedicated herself to providing healthcare to the Onge tribe, one of the oldest tribes in India. With less than 100 Onge individuals at the time, Lakra faced initial skepticism and language barriers as she tried to gain their trust. However, her unwavering commitment and regular visits enabled her to forge meaningful connections and convince them to utilize the medical facilities at the centre. Reflecting on the aftermath of the tsunami, Lakra recalls the destruction and hardships they faced. Forced to relocate further into the forest and cut off from the outside world, they lacked essential medical supplies. Amidst the chaos, Lakra braved the immense challenges, including scouring for medicines by sending messengers on long journeys to retrieve emergency supplies for the Onge. She helped deliver many babies and ensured the well being of mothers and their children. Despite the difficulties, Lakra remained resolute, walking for hours through treacherous terrains, tides, and dense vegetation to provide healthcare and support to the Onges. Over the years, Lakra's unwavering dedication has transformed healthcare access for the tribal communities of Andaman. She currently serves in the Special Ward of GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair, attending to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups referred from remote areas. Lakra's compassion extends to the Covid-19 pandemic, where she and her team ventured to tribal settlements, ensuring proper care and facilitating swift vaccination. Her efforts have been recognized globally, with Lakra becoming one of the top 10 finalists for the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023. Despite the accolades, she remains driven by the satisfaction of helping those in need, considering her work as a divine calling. As she continues her remarkable journey, Lakra's impact will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy of compassion and care.

Health Worker Goes the Extra Mile to Make Basic Healthcare Accessible to Mothers

The Central government has been trying its best to uplift the health of people in rural areas by introducing various schemes and facilities. However, due to lack of awareness among the villagers, these provisions are not harnessed to the fullest. This gap came to the notice of Shanta Garg, an Accredited Social Health Activist or ASHA worker who works in a village near Udaipur, Rajasthan. She decided to bridge the gap by making basic healthcare accessible to those living on the margins. Scope Of Work Shanta is a postgraduate who after receiving training, set out on the daily task of visiting 10 houses. She conducts various IEC (information education and communication) activities to educate mothers and children. These activities include games and stories to inculcate in them the importance of health, hygiene and nutrition. The session conducted for mothers and grandmothers was very well received. Challenges Faced The biggest challenge faced was the lack of awareness among villagers. Pregnant women wouldn’t register for the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan and didn’t avail its facilities. Shanta realized that the major hurdle was from mothers-in-law who were skeptical of these facilities and didn’t allow the women to register. Shanta then began to educate and convince the mothers-in-law and after years of counseling, they now bring their daughters-in-law to register and access the healthcare facilities. Due to Shanta’s pioneering work, children in the village have been receiving proper nutrition and vaccination. Mothers are also aware of their diet during pregnancy and how to care for newborn babies. Shanta has received awards and recognition for her work.
