For the first time in India, the Kerala government has passed a new law that has been written entirely using feminine gender pronouns. This move marks a milestone for gender equality in India and holds significant implications for women's empowerment and the recognition of their crucial role in society.
According to a release from the office of Health Minister Veena George, it was stated that the newly passed Public Health Law, 2023, was the first bill in the country to completely use feminine gender pronouns. All previous laws in the country had consistently used male pronouns until now.
This law was passed after extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including the public, health experts, and organizations, ensuring that it caters to the needs of all sections of society, especially those who require special treatment.
The bill was proposed and approved by the legislature in response to the need to battle novel viruses, pathogens, infectious diseases, epidemics, and human-animal interactions-related infectious diseases, as well as to avoid lifestyle diseases.
It is high time that policies and laws are replaced by those that recognize the different needs and contributions of men and women. This move by the Kerala government is an excellent step towards achieving gender equality and creating a more inclusive society. It is a call to action for other states and the central government to follow suit and create policies that empower women and recognize their invaluable contributions.
