India has witnessed a significant boost in its solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing capacity in 2023, adding a staggering 24 GW, according to a recent report. This surge in capacity highlights the country's commitment to renewable energy and its efforts to establish itself as a global leader in solar power generation. Gujarat Takes the Lead Among the Indian states, Gujarat emerged as the leader in solar PV manufacturing capacity, accounting for an impressive 46.1% of the country's total capacity as of December 2023. Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu followed closely behind, with 9.3% and 7.6% respectively. These states have made substantial contributions to India's solar energy goals. Solar Module and Cell Capacity During the calendar year, India added 20.8 GW of solar module capacity and 3.2 GW of solar cell capacity. This brought the cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity to 64.5 GW, while the solar cell manufacturing capacity reached 5.8 GW by the end of 2023. These figures demonstrate India's progress in strengthening its domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. Telangana Leads in Solar Cell Production Telangana emerged as the top state in annual solar cell production capacity, accounting for an impressive 39%. Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh secured the second and third spots, contributing 34.7% and 13.9% respectively. However, Indian manufacturers face challenges in navigating geopolitical tensions and trade disputes, particularly with regard to competing with cheaper Chinese products. Monocrystalline modules currently dominate the country's module production capacity, accounting for 67.5%. However, based on the current pipeline, monocrystalline modules are expected to represent 59.7% of annual module production capacity by 2026. The GHMC has just rolled out a revolutionary Any Time Cloth Bag Vending Machine that is sure to make waves across the city. This first-of-its-kind solar-powered vending machine has been installed on a pilot basis at the IDPL fruit market, and it has a capacity of 500 bags! This machine functions similarly to an ATM, where customers can easily purchase a cloth bag by inserting a Rs.10 coin or note, and it also comes with a UPI payment option for added convenience. According to the GHMC, these spacious and sturdy cloth bags can hold up to five kg of weight, which makes them perfect for carrying fruits, vegetables and groceries. The GHMC has collaborated with MOVATE and United Way of Hyderabad under their CSR initiative to make this project a reality. The project aims to provide a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bags, while also providing livelihood opportunities for women Self Help Groups (SHG). The women SHGs are provided with the material to stitch the cloth bags, which are then loaded into the vending machine, creating a steady source of revenue for them. The cloth bag dispensing machines are strategically placed near vegetable and fruit markets to encourage the community to switch from single-use plastic bags to eco-friendly alternatives. If successful, the project aims to install more vending machines in ideal locations throughout the city, including shopping complexes. With the success of this initiative, Hyderabad could lead the way for other cities in India and around the world to take similar steps toward sustainability.

As part of the government's intention of complete rural electrification, solar projects were introduced to cover remote tribal hamlets, which are not possible to get power from the general grid. Indian Railways tackle climate change through bio toilets, solar panels and more

The Indian government stands by the Paris accord and is all set to reduce its carbon footprint. As the Indian Railways is the largest rail network in the world and consumes gigantic amounts of electricity, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that it is necessary to identify a cost effective energy system with least environmental impact. Consequently, the government has planned to derive 500 MW of solar power by roof top solar installations on railway stations, administrative buildings and vacant land. Around 7,000 stations have been chosen for solar panels and excess solar energy will be sold to local business and residents. Indian Railways also intends to equip all its trains with bio-toilets. Over the years, it has partnered with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop environment-friendly bio-toilets for its passenger coaches where human waste accumulates in tanks below the toilets which is then treated and decomposed by a consortium of bacteria, as opposed to being released directly onto the tracks. So far, it has 49,000 bio-toilets in over 900 operational trains across India. The Railways also use environmentally friendly composite sleepers made of recycled plastic waste which is placed over all girder bridges to collect rainwater, that can be later used for maintenance of wagons/coaches and cleaning of stations. Supporting the afforestation drive, the Indian Railways has announced the target of planting a total of 5 crore trees along the track and rail land across the country.

Taking a step ahead to reduce the pollution in the city, over sixty societies in Mumbai have installed solar power plants on their rooftops which generates electricity. With this, Mumbai has taken a step forward to generate power in a green way. Apart from this, 400 other establishments from the state have also taken the same step to generate green energy. Mumbai generates around 1,400 units of green power a day and the same number in the state goes to 11,500 units. This move has surely given a sigh of relief for Mumbaikars by reducing the pollution. As per the report published in The Times of India, the quantity of green power generated everyday is equal to plant 1.75 lakh trees. Usually the power is generated by using coal which is in itself a source of pollution. Taking the cue from these establishments in Mumbai and state there will be 150 more consumers in Mumbai and in state 1,600 establishments, who are planning to set up the same which will avoid pollution by generating electricity unit through coal. Apart from the pollution, this system also makes the consumers a profit in the bill.

This Pathbreaking Factory Achieves Carbon Neutrality by Running Completely on Solar Power

Zurich-headquartered Multinational tech firm ABB has set up a CO2-neutral factory in the town of Luedenscheid, Germany. On a sunny day, it works totally on solar power thus eliminating their carbon footprint and setting an example in sustainable development. ABB claims that its factory which employs around 800 people to manufacture electrical equipment such as power sockets and switchers, generates all its energy needs via solar power. The Solar Photovoltaic System The facility has installed a huge solar photovoltaic system over its car park. It is slated to produce 1100 megawatt-hours of power each year that could easily meet the annual requirements of 340 homes. Speaking to CNBC’s “Sustainable Energy”, the president of ABB’s electrification business Tarak Mehta said that on a sunny day, the location need not be connected to the grid. It generates approximately 14% more energy than it needs, so surplus power is fed back to the grid. A battery system with a capacity of 275-kilowatt hours provides energy storage. Reducing Carbon Footprint Mehta stated that this factory will demonstrate how even though it consumes a lot of energy, it can yet be sustainable and carbon neutral. ABB claims that technology at the site will help to save around 630 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. While greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are threatening our environment with global warming, it is good news that people all over the world are trying hard to reduce or eliminate their carbon footprint.

5 solar power stations to come up in India

Renowned universities like Oxford, Cambridge and 12 other British and Indian universities have received a 7-million-pound grant from the UK government to build five self-sufficient solar-powered buildings in remote Indian villages. The government has given the grant as part of a new solar project ‘SUNRISE’ which works towards developing printed photovoltaic cells and new manufacturing processes to make solar energy products which can then be integrated into buildings in at least five villages of India, enabling the residents to make productive use of solar power to provide their own energy and run off grid. The programme is part of the Swansea University led SPECIFIC Project. It aims to work towards achieving the "buildings as power stations" concept. It has also started the energy-positive classroom in the UK which shows that this technology works, successfully turning buildings into power stations. Professor Dave Worsley of Swansea University, head of research at the SPECIFIC project and leader of the SUNRISE team said that this funding will enable them to export this model to support India's plans to boost solar energy. He said that the Swansea team will be working closely with partner universities in the UK and India. He feels that if the work on five villages in India is successful, then the project could be rolled out to other buildings in India and around the world. According to the Swansea University, the project supports the Indian government's plans to turn the country into a solar energy leader where solar energy will replace fossil fuels and boost the Indian manufacturing sector. The UK government granted the 7-million-pound award from its Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), which uses its cutting-edge research to help solve global issues faced by developing countries.
