The Wall Gets Its Crown: BCCI to Honour Rahul Dravid with Lifetime Achievement Award
Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Board of Control for Cricket in India at a ceremony in New Delhi on March 15. The award recognises Dravid’s extraordinary contribution to Indian cricket over nearly three decades—first as one of the greatest batters the game has seen, and later as a mentor who shaped the next generation of cricketers. Widely known as “The Wall," Dravid built a reputation for reliability, patience, and technical brilliance. His calm presence at the crease and ability to perform under pressure made him one of the most dependable players in cricket history. The ceremony will also honour former women’s captain Mithali Raj for her remarkable contributions to the women’s game. The Making of a Cricketing GiantDravid’s cricketing journey began in the mid-1990s, when he made his Test debut in 1996 at Lord’s. What followed was a career defined by resilience and consistency. Across formats, Dravid represented India 509 times, a staggering achievement that reflects his longevity and importance to the team. In Test cricket, he scored 13,288 runs in 164 matches at an average of 52.31, including 36 centuries. In One Day Internationals, he accumulated 10,889 runs in 344 matches, with 12 centuries and 83 half-centuries. Dravid also played one T20 International, against England in Manchester, but his legacy was primarily built in Tests and ODIs. He was a pillar of India’s iconic batting line-up alongside legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman. Together, they formed India’s famous “Big Four," which dominated world cricket during the late 1990s and 2000s.Legendary Performances Against the BestMany of Dravid’s finest innings came against the toughest opponents, particularly Australia, then the most dominant team in world cricket. His iconic 233 at Adelaide in 2003 remains one of the greatest Test innings played by an Indian abroad. In that match, Dravid’s marathon knock guided India to a historic victory. Dravid was not only technically sound but also mentally strong. He could bat for hours, often facing more deliveries than any other player on the field. In fact, he holds the record for facing the most balls in Test cricket and spending the longest time batting in Tests, reflecting his unmatched patience and endurance. He also became the first cricketer to score a Test century in all ten Test-playing countries at the time—a remarkable testament to his adaptability in different conditions. From Player to MentorAfter retiring from international cricket in 2012, Dravid quietly transitioned into coaching a role where he would once again leave a lasting impact. He first worked with young talent at the National Cricket Academy, where he served as Head of Cricket. His mentorship played a key role in nurturing future stars. Under his guidance, India’s Under-19 team reached the final of the 2016 Under-19 World Cup and won the 2018 Under-19 World Cup under captain Prithvi Shaw. Many players from that generation later became regular members of the senior national team. Dravid’s calm and thoughtful approach made him one of the most respected coaches in the game.Leading India to Global Success as Head CoachIn 2021, Dravid was appointed head coach of the Indian men’s national team. During his tenure, India achieved several significant milestones. The team reached the finals of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final. Although both campaigns ended as runners-up, they demonstrated India’s dominance in world cricket. The biggest moment of his coaching career came in 2024 when India lifted the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, ending a long wait for an ICC title. Soon after the triumph, Dravid stepped down from his role. Current head coach Gautam Gambhir publicly dedicated the victory to Dravid, acknowledging the strong foundation he built for the team.Celebrating a Legacy of Integrity and InspirationRahul Dravid’s story is not just about numbers or records. It is about character, humility, and dedication. For millions of cricket fans, Dravid represents values that go beyond the sport patience, discipline, and quiet determination. In an era often dominated by flamboyant stars, he showed that greatness can also come through consistency and hard work. Young cricketers across India still look up to him as a role model. Many players who were mentored by him now form the backbone of the national team. The Lifetime Achievement Award from the BCCI is therefore more than just an honour. It is a tribute to a man who built walls of resilience for Indian cricket both on and off the field. And for fans who grew up watching him defend tirelessly at the crease, Rahul Dravid will always remain exactly what he was called throughout his career India’s unbreakable Wall.
