Indian athlete Avinash Sable has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian man to qualify for the 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris Olympics on August 5, 2024. Sable's time of 8:15.43, which he set in heat 2 of round 1, placed him sixth in the competition.  Presently rated 15th in the world, Avinash Sable came in last behind Mohamed Tindouft, who set a personal best time of 8:10.62 in the event; Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia, Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya, and Ryuji Miura of Japan, who is ranked 4th in the world. The 29-year-old Indian got off to a strong start to the race with an intriguing approach. His lead grew until he was almost at the 1000-meter mark. Soon later, Abraham and Samuel passed him by.

Hardships Tackled With Faith ~ Born on September 13, 1994, in Mandwa, Maharashtra, Sable's early life was shaped by modest beginnings in a rural area with limited access to sports facilities. Despite these challenges, his passion and determination for running were evident from a young age. 

After maintaining his position in third or fourth place, Sable made a smart move to take the lead ~

But in the last sprint, the Moroccan crossed the finish line first, while Sable dropped to fifth. However, the early lead had made enough distance for him to guarantee a spot in the championship. During the final stretch, Sable is well-known for his signature "kick." However, his plan for Monday was to get out to a head start and take advantage of the early advantage. The army guy was seen slowing down and glancing at the distance behind him in the last stretch, where American Matthew Wilkinson nearly edged out the Indian for the final qualifying spot, despite having a substantial advantage. The 15-runner final is scheduled for late Wednesday night (Aug. 7), or approximately 1:13 a.m. on Thursday (IST).   

He has become a prominent personality in Indian sports by frequently breaking the national record in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Sable has accomplished things on a global scale. In 2023, he was victorious in the men's final 3000-meter steeplechase event at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. Sable's historic qualification for the final of the Paris Olympics highlights his incredible journey and establishes him as a well-known athlete on the international scene.
