A Giant Step in Astro Tourism As India’s First Ever Night Sky Sanctuary Coming Up in Ladakh

A Night Sky Sanctuary is a place that has an outstanding quality of starry nights and the night sky due to which it is conserved for its scientific, environmental, or educational worth, and the enjoyment of the general public.  There is reason to cheer as the construction of India's first-ever Night Sky Sanctuary, which is being established in Hanle, Ladakh, by CSIR under the Union Ministry of Science & Technology, is well underway and should be ready in a month. Science & Technology minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said that  "India's first-ever "Night Sky Sanctuary" will be established in Ladakh as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and the proposed Dark Sky Reserve will be completed at Hanle in Ladakh. It will boost astronomy tourism in India and make it one of the highest-located sites in the world for optical, infrared, and gamma-ray telescopes. A sanctuary differs from a reserve and adds more value as it is situated in a distant area with minimal and constrained public intrusion. The protection of a night sky sanctuary is a long-term endeavor because it is a sensitive area. Precautionary measures need to be taken to prevent any harm to the quality of its starry skies. Hanle in Ladakh has been chosen for this project since it is situated in a cold, deserted area with clear skies and dry weather all year long. Additionally, it is far from any type of human disturbance. The Union Minister stated that all parties involved are tasked with working together to preserve the night sky and safeguard it from unwelcome light pollution and lighting, which pose a major threat to scientific observations and the sky's natural conditions.

Curious About Space? Visit ’Antriksh Jigyasa”- a Space Education Portal Launched by ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has introduced "Antriksh Jigyasa",  a new digital platform that is intended to serve as a knowledge hub for applicants interested in learning about space technology and its application with STEM - Space Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Individuals interested in space exploration and space science can now sign up for the online space courses on Antriksh Jigyasa's official website. This virtual platform offers self-paced online courses with innovative e-learning content on space science, technology, and applications. The "SkyPicks" segment makes this open platform even more interesting. Here, enthusiastic students can participate and showcase their creativity.  This month's theme is - Think like a Space Scientist. Other components of Antriksh Jigyasa include Space Varta, Shiksha Gagan, SPARK, Space Quiz, and Antriksh Navacharare. Under the Space Varta program, ISRO scientists will explain the theory underlying scientific concepts relating to particular fields of space science. They will also share the accomplishments and outcomes of significant space missions. Under the Antriksh Navacharare initiative, young innovators can submit their ideas, research findings, models, software, tools, methodologies, or any other original and creative solutions.  Officials claim that since the web portal's inception, up to 560 participants have signed up.  They can now avail of 113 information repositories, 42 video sessions, seven online courses, and four knowledge partners.

India’s First Sky Cycling Park to Open Soon in Manali

Manali is all set to open a sky cycling park which is one of a kind in India. Visitors will be able to cycle for a distance of 350 m. at a height of 9000 ft. The Sky Cycling Park The sky cycling park is situated in Manali’s Gulaba area and will be thrown open to visitors in 15 days. It has been built by the Forest Department in collaboration with  Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports with the purpose of promoting tourism in the region. Local people will be trained to provide assistance and service to the tourists which will also lead to employment opportunities for the youth. Adventure Activities The sky cycling park is situated in an area which is surrounded by scenic beauty and lush green landscape. This project will attract tourists who not only can enjoy the scenic landscape but also take part in an adventure activity. People also throng Manali to enjoy paragliding and skiing at Solang Valley. The sky cycling park will be a new experience for the tourists in addition to the thrilling adventure sports taking place in the region. Kullu Divisional Forest Officer Neeraj Chadda said that the project was executed at a cost of INR 13 lakh to increase tourism and provide visitors an opportunity to participate in adventure activities. The sky cycling park seems to be a big hit when it opens as it will attract visitors to come there and enjoy this unique and thrilling experience.

When Is the ETA Aquariid Meteor Shower, and What Can You Expect?

Meteors will streak across the sky when Earth passes through dusty debris in space left by Halley's Comet during the annual Eta Aquariid meteor shower, which peaks in early May 2024. Here's an explanation for this meteor shower. WHAT IS A METEOR? The Universe is Full Of Unanswered Questions ~  ( Source: Google Images)  Meteors are space rocks and other elements that burn up as they fall through Earth's atmosphere, leaving behind a dazzling streak in the sky. They are sometimes known as shooting stars or falling stars, even though they are not stars. Comets may create meteor showers because they emit dust and debris as they circle the Sun. Meteor showers occur once a year or at regular intervals as our planet passes through debris trails while orbiting the sun. It gets its name from the origination point in the sky - called the radiant - for the debris that burns up in the atmosphere in the constellation Aquarius - the "water bearer" - and close to Eta Aquarii, one of the constellation's brightest stars and one of the four stars that comprise the top of its "water jar." The meteors are not caused by Eta Aquarii or any of the other stars in the constellation. WHEN AND WHERE CAN YOU VIEW THE METEOR SHOWER? Look Up the Sky & Get Mesmerised ~ (Source: Google Images)  According to the American Meteor Society, the Eta Aquariids are active from April 16 to May 27, with the maximum meteor rates occurring between May 1 and 10, peaking on May 5. Meteors may be observed before sunrise in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Southern Hemisphere has an advantage since the Aquarius constellation is located higher in the sky than in the Northern Hemisphere. Because the meteor activity is so light, experts recommend seeing the shower in the darkest sky possible. NASA reports that during the peak, around 30 meteors may be seen each hour. WHAT DOES HALLEY'S COMET HAVE TO DO WITH THIS? Comets are frozen relics of the solar system's origin, consisting of rock, dust, and ice. As they approach the sun, they emit dust and gasses. The most well-known comet is Halley's Comet, which was discovered by English astronomer Edmond Halley (1656-1742). It takes 76 years to complete one orbital loop around the Sun. It was last observed in Earth's skies in 1986 and is expected to return in 2061, according to NASA. Halley's Comet releases debris, resulting in the Eta Aquariid meteor shower. Debris from Halley's Comet also drives the annual Orionid meteor shower, which peaks in mid-October. HOW QUICKLY DO THESE METEORS TRAVEL? The building's unique design features 21 species of plants, including bamboo, shrubs, and flowering climbers, which cover every surface of the building, from the façade to the rooftop.   The greenery not only enhances the building's aesthetics but also improves the surrounding air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. The plants also provide a natural cooling effect, reducing the need for air conditioning and lowering energy consumption.   The Oasia Hotel Downtown's greenery is not limited to just the exterior. From Demolition to Innovation: Australia's Upcycle-a-Skyscraper Contest Saves Tons of CO2 Emissions

The Capitol Grand building was turned into a more sustainable structure and saved an estimated 5,700 tons of CO2 emissions through a contest called Upcycle-a-Skyscraper. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) in collaboration with Lendlease and Arcadis came up with the idea of the contest. Architects and engineers from all over the world were challenged to find creative ways to transform the building into a more sustainable structure. Bates Smart, an Australian firm, won the contest with a proposal to repurpose the existing structure and add green spaces and renewable energy sources. The building now has solar panels, wind turbines, and a green roof that reduces the building's carbon footprint and improves its energy efficiency. Odessa's World Heritage Status: A Triumph Against Russian Opposition

  The port city of Odessa in Ukraine referred to as the "pearl of the Black Sea," has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List after gaining six votes in favor, one against, and 14 abstentions. This came despite opposition from Russia, which had tried to delay the recognition of the city's "outstanding universal value." The designation of Odessa as a world-historic site symbolizes the collective determination to preserve the city amidst global upheavals and protect it from further destruction. President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has expressed his gratitude to the partners who have helped in protecting the city from Russian attacks. Since the Russian invasion, Ukrainian citizens have been working to protect the city's landmarks and structures using sandbags and barriers. The city's inclusion in the List of World Heritage in Danger gives it access to technical and financial international assistance for its protection and rehabilitation. UNESCO has already assisted in repairing the damages sustained by the Odessa Museum of Fine Arts and the Odessa Museum of Modern Art since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. The agency's decision to add Odessa to the World Heritage List despite Russian opposition shows its commitment to preserving important cultural sites for future generations.

This process is known as Rayleigh scattering, and it is responsible for the blue color that we see in the sky during the daytime.   The blue color of the sky is a result of the shorter wavelengths of blue light being scattered more than the longer wavelengths of red light. As a result, when sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, the blue light is scattered in all directions, making the sky appear blue to our eyes.   In addition to Rayleigh scattering, the presence of moisture and other atmospheric particles can also affect the color of the sky. For example, when there is more moisture in the air, the sky may appear to be a paler shade of blue, or even a light grey or white color.   So, we can say that the blue color of the sky in Europe is a result of the complex interplay between sunlight, the Earth's atmosphere, and a range of atmospheric particles. While the exact shade of blue may vary depending on a variety of factors, the process of Rayleigh scattering is a fundamental reason why the sky always appears to be blue during the daytime.
