Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims to Become A Reality?

A Lifesaving Initiative The Indian government has introduced a pilot scheme to offer cashless medical treatment to victims of road accidents. The initiative, currently being tested in Chandigarh and Assam, aims to provide timely trauma care and support under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPM-JAY). This groundbreaking effort was announced in Parliament, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari outlining the details. Coverage Details Under this scheme, eligible accident victims can receive health benefit packages for trauma and polytrauma care at empanelled hospitals. The coverage is capped at Rs 1.5 lakh per person for a period of up to seven days from the date of the accident. This initiative falls under the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, established as per Section 164B of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The funding and utilization details are governed by the Central Motor Vehicles (Motor Vehicle Accident Fund) Rules, 2022. Coordinated Implementation The National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is responsible for implementing the program. The NHA collaborates with local police, state health agencies, empanelled hospitals, the National Informatics Centre, and the General Insurance Council. The integration of the e-Detailed Accident Report (eDAR) application and the Transaction Management System (TMS) ensures efficient processing and management of claims. A National Vision The pilot program aims to gather data and assess the effectiveness of the cashless treatment model. Based on its success, there is potential for the scheme to be expanded nationwide, providing uniform access to emergency medical care for road accident victims across the country. This initiative is part of the broader amendments introduced under the Motor Vehicle Act 2019 (MVA2019), which emphasize the importance of immediate and cost-free medical attention for accident victims. The provision of free and cashless medical treatment is a crucial step in addressing the alarming statistics of road accidents and providing timely assistance to those in need. Mumbai's First Underground Metro Line Set to Launch in July

Mumbai is gearing up for a significant transformation in its transportation system with the launch of its first underground metro line in July. This new metro line, stretching 33.5 km beneath the busy city streets, promises to greatly reduce traffic congestion. Project Overview ~ The project, managed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, has cost over Rs 37,000 crores. It aims to address the city's ongoing traffic issues by providing a faster and more efficient mode of transport. The metro line starts at Aarey Colony and includes 27 stations, with 26 of them located underground. The extensive tunneling work, covering 56 km, began in 2017 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase Launches and Completion ~  The first phase of the metro line is set to launch in July. Innovative Blue Road in Bengal is a Game-Changer in Tackling Summer Heat!

Designed to cool the surface and beat the relentless summer heat, this extraordinary road stretch is set to create a refreshing oasis in the sweltering landscape.  Recorded temperatures of 43.8 degrees Celsius accompanied by high humidity in certain areas of East Burdwan during this summer season prompted the need for such a project. The 350-meter stretch of road in Raina, leading to a canal bridge, has been coated with a 1 mm blue pigment extracted from non-biodegradable plastic waste. Unlike traditional black-topped roads that absorb heat, this "blue road" reflects a certain degree of heat, thanks to technology transferred from Dubai. Engineers associated with the All India Roads Association facilitated the technology transfer. The road was inaugurated by the state Panchayat and Rural Development Minister, Pradip Majumdar, at Uchalon Panchayat in Raina 2 block. Minister Majumdar expressed his appreciation for this remarkable initiative, highlighting its positive impact on the environment and the reduction in construction costs compared to conventional bitumen roads. He explained that shredded plastic is mixed with molten bitumen as a substitute, reducing its use by 10% and enhancing water resistance. This blue road serves as a pilot project, and the plan is to extend it to every district in the state in phases. Similar trials using this technology have taken place in Doha, Qatar, Los Angeles, USA, and Japan, particularly in areas with intense heat and humidity. The introduction of blue roads, designed to reflect heat rather than absorb it, offers a solution to the issue of excessive heat absorption by conventional tarmac or concrete roads. This technology has already been implemented in cities like Chennai, Jamshedpur, and Agartala, but the Raina road in East Burdwan demonstrates a more cost-effective alternative. As this stunning blue path illuminates the landscape, the future of road construction takes on a refreshing and sustainable hue.

India’s First Credit Course on Driving Skills and Road Safety Has Been Introduced in Pune

In a first for the nation, a specially created course with two credit points called "Driving Skills and Road Safety Awareness" has been launched in Pune. This course, developed by the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) and Driving Schools' Association, is open to all students and is offered at the G H Raisoni College of Engineering and Management (GHRCEM), Pune. Maharashtra transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar who inaugurated the course said that it was a matter of pride for the state to start the first-of-its-kind course not only in Maharashtra but across India for road safety awareness.  Bhimanwar said that 80% of the people who lose their lives in road accidents are in the age group of 18 to 35 years, which is our young population. He added that we cannot be a world superpower if we do not save each and every life. He stated that tests conducted after every accident reveal that almost 90% of the accidents were avoidable. Campus director professor Kharadkar said that apart from the technical college and engineering courses, it is necessary to work for the overall development of students. Therefore, it was decided to introduce this course. The student who successfully completes this 18-hour course will receive two credit points.  The main reason for creating this course for college students is to help them comprehend scientific driving techniques, various modes of transportation, and vehicle categories; reasons why accidents happen on the road; defensive driving techniques; and most importantly, to make road safety awareness a skill with employment opportunities.

Yes You Read It Right....Rs. 100/- for Driving Safe

  We all have normally heard that traffic police fined Rs.100 to a driver who was drunk or a speedy motorbike was stopped and fined for not following the signal. But I am sure you have never heard before that a car driver or a biker received Rs.100/- as a reward and also an appreciation certificate to follow Road Safety rules and regulations.  Frankly speaking, it is hard to believe yet it is true. A first in its own way, Odisha’s Keonjhar district has come up with this unique initiative of rewarding Rs.100/- for following rules under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act. The real purpose is to prevent accidents by creating awareness of road safety among riders and drivers. Jay Narayan Pankaj, the district superintendent of police (Keonjhar), told TOI. “We began the radical initiative on Saturday and have so far given money incentives and certificates to at least 50 excellent riders/drivers. We will use the street protection fund to pay those who obey road and visitors regulations.”  He also added, “Catching rash drivers and penalizing them is common and apply around the nation. For a metamorphosis, we thought of giving due popularity to excellent drivers. This is the primary time within the nation that police are paying money incentive to excellent drivers. The inspectors in-charge (IIC)s of police stations had been tasked with the duty of opting for the good rider or motive force. The money incentive will likely be paid at the spot. Since it's not conceivable to test each rider or motive force every day, we will habit surprise checking at different places.”     Many riders/drivers have died in the road accidents for neglecting the road safety rules and unfortunately every year there is a rise in this number.  The Keonjhar district, regional transport officers and police wanted to control this or rather stop this and hence awakening steps were taken by them.  “I was jittery when police stopped me and requested me to turn my driving licence and motorcycle insurance paper. After I produced both, I was made to go through a breathalyser test. When I cleared all assessments, the police handed over Rs 100 as a reward and a certificate to me, much to my surprise. I had by no means anticipated to be rewarded for driving neatly,” Sanjeev Pradhan, a biker told TOI.    An appreciation to the good riders/drivers is actually a genuine eye-opening experience for all.

In A Smart Move, Vishakapatnam Lays Roads With Plastic Waste

The Greater Vishakapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has adopted the smart and eco- friendly method of laying roads with plastic waste, thereby putting the non-biodegradable plastic waste to good use. So far, it has completed 16 such road stretches. These roads are not just cost-effective but last longer than the usual asphalt roads. Besides utilising plastic waste effectively, such roads can withstand heavy rains and do not easily get washed away, thereby preventing damages to roads. Depending on the availability of plastic, the GVMC has plans to lay more roads with plastic waste across all the GVMC zones.

World’s Highest Motorable Road Now In Ladakh At 19,300 ft

India builds World's highest motorable road that passes through the Umlingla top at a height of over 19,300 ft.  The outstanding construction comes under Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region, 86 km road was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under the ‘Project Himank’ in almost six years. Project Himank before building the Umlingla Pass road had also constructed the Khardangu La pass in Ladakh at 17,900 ft and Chang La pass at 17,695 ft.  But the road to the Uturuncu dormant volcano in Bolivia at 18,953 ft was believed to be the world’s highest motorable. And now the Umlingla Top is world's highest, truly it is India's Pride.  Though it was not easy to achieve such a difficult task, all hands were put together with stop at nothing attitude. Many life threating challenges were faced by the workers said the Chief Engineer, Project Himank, Brigadier DM Purvimath.  He also added the temperature was around minus 10-20 degrees C during peak summers and went down to almost -40 degrees C during winters. And because of severe climate efficiency of Manpower and machines declines to 50%.  The machine operators had to come down after every 10 mins for oxygen. Though special training was given to the workers before recruiting them serious health problems were faced by them like loss of memory, eyesight and high blood pressure said the Commander, 753 BRTF, Pardeep Raj, who looked after the road construction. He also added, “Acclimatisation of men is done at three stages- Leh, Shakti and Numa- before being inducted into the sector. Physical and mental fitness of men is emphasised upon for working in the area as the working season is limited in the region.” The highest motorable road also had to face the objection of China as the road connects the villages of Chisumle and Demchok which are very close to China Border. Finally looking on the brighter side, this proves that nothing can stop the Indians... and the sky is the limit.

Artificial Intelligence for Better Roads

Hyderabad based premier institution, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is devising high tech solutions for problems faced by common man in the real world. After the rains here, a major issue with the city is the potholes ridden roads which are a  big inconvenience for travellers. To help the government to counter this problem, the IIIt has started work on a project that uses AI algorithms to identify and study the condition of the roads which will help the government to maintain them. IIIT-Hyderabad director Prof PJ Narayanan said that they were working on a project where a car fitted with a few cameras is sent on the roads and the back-end algorithms helps in detecting potholes, water logging or obstructions. These basic facts are not easy to collect, but their device will collect them automatically and help the municipal corporation to conduct work can be done on them. IIIT-Hyderabad professor CV Jawahar, who is leading the project said that the work has been started only a few weeks ago and it may take a couple of months before the institute can come up with a proper proposal to submit to the government. If the project meets with success, it would be the first instance where government used AI to tackle a civic issue and people can look forward to better roads and smoother rides.

Over 9000 projects to be rolled out in a day in Rajasthan

This month end, PM Modi is slated to visit Rajasthan and create a record of sorts as he will roll out around 9,500 road projects and state’s flagship programmes at a cost of over RS 27,000 crore. The PM will visit Udaipur next week to lay foundation stones for the projects as well as inaugurate some completed ventures. He will be accompanied by Union highways minister, Nitin Ghadkari and chief minister Vasundhara Raje Most of the projects pertain to improvement and construction of state roads. Around 11 completed NH projects totalling about 873-km in length will be inaugurated by PM Modi including a six-lane cable-stayed bridge across the river Chambal in Kota. The projects are sanctioned under the Centre’s rural connectivity programmes while some fall under those of the state government such as PM Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY), Rajasthan Road Sector Modernisation Project (RRSMP) and Gramin Gaurav Path. Thirty-one projects are on the build-operate and-transfer (BOT) model. In fact, Rajasthan leads in implementing public-private-partnership road projects under the BOT model. The PM is expected to address a ‘mammoth rally’ in Udaipur during his visit. According to reports, he may also roll out various housing and development related works across cities in Rajasthan.

Australian software to manage AP roads

The Roads and Buildings department in Andhra Pradesh has an advanced software that will help to keep its roads well maintained. The Australian Road Research Board has supplied the state with six software-fitted vehicles, called HawkEye Professional Network Survey Vehicle that will analyze data related to the condition of roads in the state. These vehicles can maneuver through every nook and corner of the road and collect data in the form of photographs and video footage. The state government’s Road Management System and the Road Database Management System have been in operation since April and has collected data related to a total road network of 47,000kms. Data pertaining to around 14,722 km have been analyzed so far by the R&B department. The remaining analysis is slated to be completed in another three months. The software enables the APRMS to have a scientific approach towards road maintenance as per the available budget. AP Road Development Corporation (APRDC), managing director, G Jagannadha Rao informed that the software prompts or suggests whether to go ahead with a normal maintenance work or a new layer is required to be laid on a road.Accordingly, the work can be executed.

Film Ralang Road will represent India at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. This is a Nepali-Hindi film directed by Karma Takapa and produced by HumanTrail Pictures. The story of the film revolves around a day spent in a small hill town where series of weird coincidences related to mysterious robbery occur. This brings four people together. As the day comes to an end, the situations take more dramatic twists. These lead the four people into puzzling upcoming consequences of the fright around. The film is shot in Rabong town of Sikkim and touches every aspect of the cultural and social lifestyle of the people in a tragic setup. Major cast of the film is normal local people with no prior acting experience. This will be after a gap of about 13 years that any Indian film will be competing with other international films at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. With market growing with 17 per cent, according to a market report, over 4,00,000 students from India travelled abroad for studies in 2016-17. The Jet programme covers students from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal who hold confirmed admissions for studying at universities/ institutions in Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, and USA. The Air India programme includes flights operated by the national carrier from India to destinations like Newark, New York, London, Birmingham, Osaka, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, Milan, Vienna, Madrid, Moscow, etc. Under the Jet Airways "eduJetter" programme for the 2017-18 academic year, students will be allowed 69kg baggage, free SIM cards, and through baggage check-ins right up to the final destination. After booking the tickets, students can go to the eduJetter page on Jet Airways website and fill up the form. The student will then receive an updated ticket from the airline with applicable eduJetter benefits within 72 hours. The Air India Maharaja Scholars' Offer 2017 (details are on AI website) allows students travelling on a valid student visa or student exchange visa to carry one extra 23kg bag free on board AI flights to the US and Europe. Pashan-Baner residents to avoid plastic bags

With a view to reduce the usage of plastic waste, residents of Baner Pashan Link Road will start a project to avoid using plastic bags. Area’s Vikas Samiti’s executive committee is ensuring that the residents use cloth bags made of old saris for local shopping. The committee members are working to convince the shopkeepers in the area to sell cloth bags at minimum profit rate and avoid using plastic bags. The group also plans to put up banners and posters all over the area to convince the residents to adopt this environmentally sustainable model.  As per a report published in the Times of India, Seema Agrawal, vice-president of the committee, said, "The biggest component of dry garbage seen around our area is plastic. Once mixed with other garbage, recycling it becomes difficult. Ideally we should segregate plastic and give to waste pickers. Even the non-woven bags we see in many shops that look like cloth are fake. In fact, they are more damaging as they cannot be recycled." After a social responsibility was undertaken by Madhavi Sardeshpande, a National Laboratory Scientist who collected old saris as donations and employed underprivileged women of Pashan and Sutarwadi to make bags.

After yoga and self-defence, now road safety will also be a part of school education in Utter Pradesh. With increasing number of road accidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath now stresses the need to educate children about road safety. This road safety will be a part of all government run primary and secondary schools.  Now the officials have asked to incorporate a chapter that teaches students details about road safety. Also to ensure the safety of students traveling by school bus. there will be ‘Track My Bus’ mobile application to know the location of UPSRTC buses in real time.  The CM issued these directives while watching a presentation on the transport department’s programmes and policies on Saturday evening. With increasing number of road mishaps, it is a matter of concern for Uttar Pradesh.  19,320 people died and another 25,096 were injured in 35,612 cases of road accidents reported between January 2016 and December 2016 in Uttar Pradesh. With students getting the knowledge of road safety and precautionary measures while traveling, this move will surely help students in transforming into a better citizens.

Bengaluru Startup Is Saving Lives and the Environment by Filling Potholes With Recycled Plastic

Potholes are a common sight on our roads and most of us have mastered the art of maneuvering through them, but when they become fatal, then it's a matter to be seriously dealt with. PotHoleRaja, a startup founded by Prathap Bhimasena Rao and Sourabh Kumar has helped citizens get rid of potholes and thus avoid accidents. The startup was founded in 2016, and since then, it has repaired around 30,000 potholes nationwide. Speaking to the Indian Express, Kumar who is the Director of the Bengaluru-based startup said that it was the news of people dying due to potholes that prompted them to start this venture. This year in July, the startup constructed a road outside the Ecoworld site in Bellandur utilizing GridMats, its patented product. It involves the use of recycled polypropylene to make the road's construction material. The idea behind GridMats is to repurpose plastic waste to create durable and sustainable roads and pavements. As in normally built concrete roadways, this technology does not employ steel reinforcements. Kumar revealed that they have currently installed 5,000 square meters of GridMat in locations like Bengaluru and Mumbai, and very soon they will be able to operate in Hyderabad. He said that there have been inquiries from Africa and people there have expressed an interest in bringing their technology to their continent. The  Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and PotHoleRaja have collaborated on numerous road construction projects. PotHoleRaja makes sure the roads are built for future use and can be used in other parts of the city as well.

At 71 years old, she is a pioneer in the world of driving, holding an impressive eleven different licenses, including those for heavy-duty machines like JCBs and cranes. Embracing a Bold Path Radhamani's journey into the driving world began as a collaborative effort with her husband who owned and managed a driving school. He saw her potential and encouraged her to drive heavy vehicles. It was his confidence in her that gave flight to her dreams. Reflecting on her early days, she reminisced, "I obtained my four-wheeler licence in 1981 and then acquired my heavy vehicle licence in 1984. Back then, it was rare for women to venture into driving heavy vehicles, but my husband's continued support propelled me forward." Overcoming Challenges and Pioneering Change The path was not without obstacles. In a time when women behind the wheels of heavy vehicles were a rarity, Radhamani faced curiosity and skepticism. However, fueled by her husband's vision and her own determination, she forged ahead. In 2004, tragedy struck with the untimely demise of her husband. Undeterred, Radhamani seized the reins of their driving school, transforming it from A2Z driving school to A2Z driving institute, expanding its scope to include training for operating heavy equipment. The newly installed technology on 14th Street, developed by the Israeli company Electreon, allows electric vehicles (EVs) to charge while driving on the road. This revolutionary road, a testing ground for Electreon's wireless-charging technology, aims to address the range limitations of EVs and pave the way for a future of efficient electric transportation. By utilizing inductive-charging coils installed beneath the road surface, equipped EVs with receivers can receive continuous charging as they travel. Dr. Stefan Tongur, Electreon's Vice President of Business Development, expressed excitement over spearheading America's first wireless charging road and acknowledged the collaborative efforts with the State of Michigan and the Department of Transportation (MDOT). The road segment, spanning between Marantette and Dalzelle streets, marks a significant step towards the development of an electric road system (ERS). The wireless charging technology is based on inductive coupling, which enables the transfer of electricity through a magnetic field between the road's coils and receivers installed on the underside of EVs. The system ensures controlled and precise energy transfer, activating only when an approved receiver-equipped vehicle passes over the charging segment. Michigan's Department of Transportation and Electreon plan to install a mile of inductive-charging roadway along US-12 (Michigan Avenue) in 2024. Revolutionizing Mobility: South Korean Universities Unveil Cutting-Edge Material Advancements for Air and Road Travel

South Korean universities have developed a new composite material that could revolutionize air and road mobility. Researchers from Solutions to Electromagnetic Interference in Future-mobility (SEIF), Hanyang University, and Jeonbuk National University have created a self-reinforced composite (SRC) that uses only one type of polypropylene (PP) polymer, resulting in improved bonding and tensile strength, as well as impact resistance. In fact, the SRC they created had adhesive strength 333% greater than composites currently in use, while tensile strength was 228% greater and impact resistance was a staggering 2,700% higher.  Apart from toughness, SRCs are lightweight, inexpensive, and have advantages in terms of disposal and recycling as the reinforcement and the base material are composed of the same material. Current manufacturing processes for SRCs involve mixing chemically different components, resulting in poorer physical properties and preventing recyclability. However, the Korean researchers found a successful way to control the melting point, fluidity, and impregnation by adjusting the chain structure of the polypropylene matrix through a four-axis extrusion process. The new material is being looked at as the next-generation composite material to replace carbon-fiber-reinforced composites used in vehicle and aircraft/drone bodies. With the new composite material, vehicles and aircrafts will be more fuel-efficient while significantly reducing carbon footprints. The development of this new material could pave the way for a more sustainable future in air and road mobility.

Women are no less than men. In today's world, we have female representation in every field. So, why the world of dummies should fall behind?  In a recent set of events, the world's first female car crash test dummy has been developed by researchers at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute in Linköping, led by Dr. Astrid Linder.  Prior to this, crash test dummies were based on the average male body, which led to a significant gender bias in safety testing. Now, you may wonder a mannequin is a mannequin, why bring gender into it?  Well, it isn't so. Men and women have different physical features; and the same goes for dummies, specifically designed for a man's body, which were in use for the last 51 years. According to a BBC report, physical variations can drastically alter how our bodies respond to a car crash's impact. Women in the US are three times more likely to suffer whiplash injuries if the car they are in gets struck from behind.  The newly developed female dummy has been designed to accurately represent the female form and address this disparity in crash test data. She is 162cm tall and weighs 62kg — the same dimensions as an average woman today. She is also equipped with sensors that can measure the impact on her chest, pelvis, and other areas that are more vulnerable in women. This marks a major milestone in the field of automotive safety testing. By providing more accurate and comprehensive data, she will help car manufacturers develop safer vehicles for all occupants, regardless of gender. She will also improve the accuracy of safety ratings, making it easier for consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing a vehicle. Learn More About the Longest Passenger Train in the World!

Switzerland recently claimed a world record - for the world’s longest passenger train. The world's longest passenger train is owned by the Rhaetian Railway business in Switzerland. According to a report from the Associated Press, the train traveled 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) along the Albula/Bernina route from Preda to Bergün. The train traveled through one of the most spectacular tracks in the Alps, along the picturesque route, which is noted for its 48 bridges and 22 tunnels, many of which pass through mountains. It is one of the most beautiful pathways and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Rail aficionados watched the 25 sections of the train go 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) through the Alps while they were present in the valley to watch the splendid sight of the long train maneuvering through the mountains. In a little more than an hour, the entire trip was finished. Renato Fasciati, director of the Rhaetian Railway Company, stated that the record was intended to highlight some of Switzerland's engineering accomplishments and commemorate 175 years of Swiss railroads. The Director told the local media, "For me, this is just Swiss perfection." The company declared that it had beaten the  Guinness World Record for the longest passenger train after the journey.
