The term 'carbon negative' signifies an entity's ability to emit less than zero carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) greenhouse gases. This is achieved through ingenious processes such as carbon capture, sequestration, and avoidance, which collectively offset more carbon than the entity introduces into the environment. Established in 1948 as a distinguished educational institution for the armed forces, the CME plays a pivotal role in training personnel across all ranks of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, in addition to training foreign military members on diverse technical and tactical aspects of evolving warfare strategies. In recent times, the College of Military Engineering has undertaken an array of forward-thinking projects to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Spearheaded by the Military Engineering Services (MES) through the office of Garrison Engineer (CME), Khadki, these initiatives have yielded impressive results, the most prominent being the phased implementation of the 7-MW solar power plant. For the first time in the history of the armed forces, the Indian Navy has chosen to let women join its elite forces and serve as commandos. The move to enlist women in the special forces, according to Navy authorities, will improve their capability. To thwart unwanted threatening activities in Indian territory, the Air Force, Navy, and Army special forces undergo the most difficult and demanding training. For a very long time, the special forces in all three defense services have been male-dominant. Women can now opt to join marine commandos if they satisfy the Indian Navy's eligibility requirements. As per the guidelines, both sailors and female officers starting their military career as Agniveers next year will have the option to volunteer to become Marcos in the marine forces. Stating that this is a turning point in India’s military history, a naval officer said that no one is directly assigned a post, but people can volunteer for it. In the armed forces, Marcos undergoes extensive training to carry out many missions. They are able to conduct operations on the seas, in the air, and on land. The commandos are also capable of conducting offshore secret operations against enemy warships and installations. To support naval operations, they are trained for specialized diving activities. Women are now welcome in all branches of the Navy to perform tasks related to vessel duties, aviation, Marcos, and other naval services. Over time, the marine defence has changed to become a force that is open to all genders.

Indian Army’s Decision to Induct Women As Soldiers Is a Major Step Towards Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

Following a decision made in January by the then Defence Minister N Sitaraman, the Indian Army has allowed the recruitment of women to the Military Police wing of the Army. Women were not allowed to take up combat roles until now and they served in areas such as medical, engineering, legal arms of the Army. Women In Combat Roles After serving in the medical, legal and engineering departments of the Indian Army, women will now be allowed to serve as military soldiers. According to General Bipin Rawat, the development will help induct women into combat roles which currently is exclusive to men. 100 women have been chosen among thousands of volunteers across the country and they will be given a 61-week training which is equivalent to that given to male soldiers. The training regimen will commence in December this year in Bengaluru. Training Instructors Colonel Commandant of the Military police, Lt General Ashwini said that the first set of instructors was very crucial as they will lay down the foundation for generations to come. She said that the majority of instructors would be women officers including Maj Julie who was the instructor to the first batch of women constables in Assam Rifles. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, every year 100 women soldiers will be inducted in the Army till there will be 1,700 cadre strength. As part of the Military Police, the women soldiers will help maintain law and order at Army establishments, help maintain logistics and supplies during war and peace, policing prisoners of war and help to check breach of rules and regulations by soldiers. CRPF mulling over the use of tech to track looted weapons

Technology is set to occupy an important place in the military as CRPF, India's largest paramilitary force is considering the use of technology to track weapons looted by Maoists in Left-wing extremism-affected districts and terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir. The technology will include the use of GPS tracker or biometric software to track the weapons and it should also be able to render the weapons useless. Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Director General of CRPF asserted that his team is mulling over the use of such technology. However, he said that at present, it is in the planning stage. According to official sources, the CRPF have consulted some private tech companies which could provide GPS tracker/RFID chip or biometric software so that weapons looted by ultras could be traced and disabled. The idea of using technology to track weapons is the brainchild of Home Minister Rajnath Singh who floated the idea after the April 24 Maoist attack in Sukma. However, according to reports, several officials expressed doubts about such an idea as they felt that this kind of technology is difficult to incorporate in weapons. Currently, few countries like the US use GPS technology in some of their weapons.

Dharwad Girl From Remote Karnataka Village Defies All Odds to Join Military

Many young girls strive to enter the military forces and Bheemaka is one of them. Her rural background didn’t deter her from dreaming big. Bheemaka desired to join the military and she was ready to overcome all the odds that came in her way of achieving her dream. She was inspired to join the military and she took up NCC in college. Military Dream After former defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s decision to induct women in the military police to enhance their representation in the armed forces, many women have been inspired to join the military. 18-year-old Bheemaka M Chavan who hails from the remote Madikoppa village of Dharwad district is one such young girl with a dream. From a young age, she was inspired to join the military and she subsequently took up NCC in college. Overcoming Odds As she trained physically, for NCC she became the target of criticism by villagers. Yet, she persevered with her efforts and for physical fitness and joined the Rural Defence Training Academy in Kittur. She completed two months of training during her college vacations. The guides at the Academy helped her to fill forms and get through the formalities. Her grit, hard work and determination helped her to land the job of a military police officer. Bheemaka who wore tracksuits and pants for training was often criticized by villagers as they asked her what she was going to achieve by dressing up as a boy. This song, composed by Major M. T. Proktor, honors Rifleman Badluram, a soldier of the 1st Battalion, Assam Regiment, who laid down his life in World War II. It is sung with pride by new recruits during their passing-out parade in Shillong and has become a timeless reminder of both sacrifice and survival.The Man Behind the Name—Rifleman BadluramBorn in a time when India was still under British rule, Rifleman Badluram served in the British Indian Army’s Assam Regiment. In 1944, during the Second World War, his unit was stationed in and around Kohima in present-day Nagaland. This was no ordinary posting; it was the frontline against the Imperial Japanese Army advancing towards British India. In the early days of the Battle of Kohima, Badluram was hit by enemy fire and died a soldier’s death. His comrades buried him on the battlefield. Normally, his name would have been removed from the ration register. But fate and a certain quartermaster’s decision had other plans.A Quartermaster’s Quick ThinkingThe quartermaster of the Assam Regiment at the time was Subedar Kandarpa Rajbongshi, a man known for his resourcefulness. For reasons still debated—some say it was intentional, others say it was forgetfulness—he never removed Badluram’s name from the ration list. This meant that for months, the company continued to receive food supplies “for Badluram” even though he was no longer there to eat them. At the time, this surplus didn’t seem like much. But soon, it would become the difference between life and death.The Siege of Kohima—Britain’s Greatest BattleBy April 1944, Japanese troops had surrounded Kohima. Supply lines were cut, food was running out, and the steep, hilly terrain made air drops unreliable. To make matters worse, Japanese anti-aircraft guns shot down many supply aircraft, further strangling the flow of essentials. For most units, rations became dangerously low. Soldiers were surviving on limited water, sometimes as little as a pint a day. Hunger was constant, and morale was tested. But for Badluram’s company, things were slightly better. Thanks to the “extra” supplies still coming in his name, they had a small but vital reserve. This hidden advantage helped them endure the siege until relief came.From Survival to SongAfter the war ended, Major M. T. Proktor decided to immortalize this incident in song. Using the tune of the American marching song “John Brown’s Body,” he wrote new lyrics telling the story of Badluram, the soldier buried in the ground whose rations kept his comrades alive. Irvine's Great Park Project: Military Base to Become America's Largest City Park, A Haven for Greenery and Amenities

The city of Irvine in California is set to boast the largest city park in the United States, as construction begins on the Great Park Project. Spanning 1,300 acres, the project will be built on the site of the former El Toro Marine Corps Base, which has been derelict for many years. The park is expected to take at least another decade to complete, but will feature a range of amenities including museums, an amphitheater, a veterans memorial garden, an aquatics center, a sports complex, and two lakes. The project is being funded by $455 million in municipal bonds, with the total cost estimated at $1 billion. The park is being designed by Irvine professionals from SWA Group and Kellenberg Studios, and is expected to dwarf New York's Central Park by more than 500 acres. The first stage of the project involves demolishing and clearing away 77 old military buildings, while the El Toro air traffic control tower will be leased by the Federal Aviation Administration. A portion of the park is already open to visitors, featuring a soccer pitch and tethered balloon rides. Irvine City Councilman Michael Carroll, who serves as Chairman of the Great Park Board, said, "After many years of community input and after the last year of intensive planning and design, we are excited to be launching what is a $1 billion investment to establish the world’s next great metropolitan park." Women in the Ukrainian Army Now Have a Reason To Smile

It's been ten months since the Russia - Ukraine war broke out and finally, the women in the Ukrainian army have a reason to smile. Since the war started, tens of thousands of women in the Ukrainian armed forces have been wearing men’s army uniforms due to the unavailability of women’s uniforms. Now, this is going to change, as some volunteers have taken it upon themselves to design and stitch military clothing for women. Yulia Mykytenko, 27, an army woman, said that finding the right uniform for women has always been challenging. Some women have wide hips while others have narrow chests and one just cannot loosen up uniforms in the armed forces. Mykytenko adds that if one gets a size 44, it will stay good on the hips, but will be too large for the shoulders. She joined the armed forces even before Russia invaded Ukraine and has been facing issues with her uniform. She revealed that her waist being thinner, she had to wear the trousers on her hips or get a bigger size and gather and tie them in with a belt, so they wouldn’t hang or fall off. There’s good news now as Stanyslav Bitus, a fashion designer, has volunteered to design and stitch army uniforms for women. He said that he had it in his mind for a long time to design female military uniforms but didn’t have anywhere to do it. On a friend’s suggestion, he started using the premises of a non-governmental organization and continues to produce the perfect military uniforms for women.

US military base is home for rare butterfly

The US military comprises of giant war machines and tiny rare butterflies that are flourishing there, thanks to the tailor-made vegetation at these bases that allow them to proliferate. Robyn Niver, an endangered species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that a rare butterfly called the frosted elfin which has a wingspan of 1-inch (2.5 centimeters) has made several defense installations their home because of the way the military manages open spaces. The little brown butterfly has been found to thrive at Westover Air Reserve Base, Camp Edwards in Massachusetts; Fort McCoy in Wisconsin; Fort Bragg in North Carolina; and the New Hampshire State Military Reservation. The frosted elfin’s caterpillar feeds on plants like the wild blue lupine and indigo and these plants are allowed to grow at the bases as they are of the proper height. Keeping the safety of the massive C5 military transport aircraft that are parked at the base, proper vegetation control is important. If the vegetation is too short, geese and gulls will flock increasing the risk of aircraft strikes. If the vegetation grows too tall, then it will attract turkeys, deer, and coyotes. Plants like lupine and indigo are just the right height and prove to be the common thread between the military base and the butterflies.

US agrees to the sale of 22 Guardian drones to India

The Indian Navy got a boost last week as the United States cleared the sale of predator Guardian drones that India had sought in order to enhance its Navy’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Modi’s US visit brought about this great development as both PM Modi and President Donald Trump signed a key defence agreement after they had pledged for security and co-operation between the two countries. After the Modi-Trump Summit at the White House, a joint statement was issued stating that India and the US will work together on advanced defence equipment and technology at a level commensurate with that of America’s closest allies and partners. In this context, the US has agreed to the sale of Sea Guardian Unmanned Aerial Systems, which would enhance India’s capabilities and promote shared security interests. The trilateral Malabar naval exercise involving the US, Japan and India will take place soon and leaders of both the countries have decided to look at new exercises and enhance their engagements on shared maritime objectives. Reiterating the importance of a successful security partnership between the United States and India, Trump said that the US and Indian military forces are working every day to enhance cooperation between them and next month, they will participate, along with Japan in the largest maritime exercise ever conducted in the vast Indian Ocean.
