Addressing the challenge of wood availability, the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), under the guidance of District Collector K Varun Reddy, took the initiative to establish Poniki Vanam. The area is enclosed by fencing and equipped with a borewell, ensuring a sustainable supply of softwood. Securing a six-acre parcel of land in the Maheboob Ghat forest area, the project involved collaboration with the district forest officer. Over 5,200 plants were procured from Uttarakhand and planted in the vanam. Additionally, around 1,000 seeds of identified trees were cultivated in the district's forest area, resulting in a thriving plantation. The Ponki plants, known for their softwood, were found to be elusive in the local forest due to unsuitable soil conditions. With the establishment of Poniki Vanam, artisans now have a reliable source of this unique wood, eliminating the need to source it from various locations. This initiative not only ensures the preservation of the traditional art of nakasha embodied in Nirmal toys but also holds promise for the growth and sustenance of the local craftsmen. The distinctive appeal of Ponki wood, unmatched by other alternatives, adds to the allure of these exquisite toys, securing the heritage of Nakasha artistry for future generations.

The Significance of World Hindi Day

After Mandarin Chinese and English, Hindi has over 600 million native speakers making it the third most widely spoken language in the world. With pride, World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 every year. It commemorates the day in 1949 when Hindi was first used in the General Assembly of the United Nations and is also referred to as Vishwa Hindi Diwas. The first World Hindi Day was observed on January 10, 2006, at the initiative of former prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In 1950, Hindi became India's official language. On World Hindi Day, Hindi is celebrated as a worldwide language. The purpose of the Hindi Diwas is to raise awareness of both the use of the Indian language and the persistent problems with its promotion and usage. It also emphasizes strongly the importance of fostering a love of the language and respecting the contributions of Hindi speakers. The Indian government also organizes a conference to promote Hindi. The first meeting, known as the "World Hindi Conference," took place in Nagpur in 1975. The conference was attended by 122 representatives in total from 30 countries. This year, the Ministry of External Affairs will work with the Government of Fiji to conduct the 12th World Hindi Conference in Fiji from February 15–17. The primary theme of the conference celebrating World Hindi Day in 2023 is "Hindi: From Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence." The Denarau Island Convention Center in Nadi, Fiji, will host the conference. According to a statement on the World Hindi Conference's official website, several exhibitions connected to the growth of the Hindi language will be organized at the conference location.

Gnanasekaran, who understands the struggles of underprivileged students, having completed his own studies in a government school, was inspired to launch the program after witnessing the joy and thrill in the eyes of kids from an orphanage during a flight in 2016. Since 2019, he has organized multiple one-day flight trips, offering students a memorable journey from Coimbatore to Chennai. The trips include visits to popular landmarks like the Anna Centenary Library, BM Birla Planetarium, and Marina beach, providing a perfect blend of fun and learning for the children and their families. Despite a pause in the trips due to the pandemic, Gnanasekaran resumed the initiative in 2022 and continues to make dreams come true in 2023. Alongside the flight journeys, he also supports single-child families with financial assistance and provides scholarships to SC/ST students in his panchayat. Gnanasekaran's unwavering dedication and commitment to empowering underprivileged students have made him a beloved figure in the village. His ultimate goal is to continue taking these children on flight journeys, igniting their dreams and helping them reach new heights in life.

A Joseph: The Visionary Behind Puducherry's Towering Totem of Welfare

In the bustling streets of Puducherry, a city in southern India, a 49-year-old man named A Joseph has emerged as a symbol of selflessness and change. Despite his own physical challenges, Joseph has dedicated himself to uplifting the lives of others through acts of kindness and social service. Joseph, who hails from Ariyankuppam and has dwarfism, uses a portion of his income to support various social causes. He purchases food and clothing for the underprivileged, raises awareness about epidemics, and distributes refreshing buttermilk to police personnel working under the scorching sun. His journey towards compassion began in 2008 when he helped a blind person who had fallen on the road. This incident ignited a passion within Joseph to assist differently-abled individuals and the elderly who live on the streets. Despite having discontinued his formal education after the ninth grade, Joseph later cleared his Class 10 examination as a private candidate. He established his own shop specializing in printing tasks, bookbinding, and rubber stamp making. With a monthly income ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, he supports his mother and provides clothing and food to those in need. He even offers free bookbinding services to government school students. Joseph actively engages in campaigns during elections, emphasizing the importance of voting through door-to-door canvassing. He collaborates with doctors to organize free health camps and educates the public about disease prevention, particularly regarding dengue and malaria. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a crucial role in spreading awareness and encouraging vaccination. Through his unwavering dedication and acts of kindness, A Joseph has become an epitome of compassion and welfare, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Mind-Boggling Feat: Wonder Kid Sets New Memory Record, Leaving the World Astonished

A five-year-old boy from Chandarlapadu in NTR District has made it to the World Book of Records for his exceptional memory skills. Garigipati Jhaswik Sriyan has already memorized an impressive array of facts, including the names of 60 animals, 23 vegetables, 40 English rhymes, the Indian pledge, Vandemataram, the national anthem, and Sanskrit devotional slokas such as Gayatri Mantra, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, Jaya Janardana, Hanuman Dandakam, etc. By the age of three, the young prodigy had already made a reputation for himself in the memory circuit. His parents, G Ramakrishna, a police sub-inspector and G Devayani, a pharmacologist and homemaker, noticed his curiosity and started teaching him alphabets, colors, vegetables, fruits, etc. at the age of two. He quickly grasped the information and responded with remarkable accuracy. Jhaswik's abilities encompass knowledge of sea animals, insects, flowers, body parts, colors, vehicles, professions, musical instruments, sports, and beyond. Recognizing his prowess, his mother decided to explore his problem-solving abilities through puzzles. Starting with basic puzzles, Jhaswik swiftly progressed to handling complex ones. At the age of four, his talent caught the attention of Kalams World Records, and his journey to earning several prestigious awards began. Jhaswik's achievements continued to soar as he set a new record on May 8, 2023, by becoming the fastest kid to solve 50 jigsaw puzzles in 5 minutes, an incredible feat recognized by India Book of Records and also earned a title of Grand Master from Asia Book of Records. His ability to rearrange 553 pieces of jigsaw puzzles in a mere 59 minutes earned him further appreciation from India Book of Records on April 7, 2023.   The young prodigy's repertoire of skills extends beyond puzzles. Jhaswik possesses an artistic side, excelling in slime preparation, toy-making, and painting. He is now learning Kuchipudi and Karate in his school St. Lucy in Mangalapalli of Chandarlapadu mandal.

Unstoppable Spirit: Limbless Teen Defies Odds, Leaves Thiruvananthapuram Awestruck with Remarkable Swimming Skills

In a remarkable feat of determination and resilience, 17-year-old Muhammad Aasim, who was born without limbs, has amazed all by swimming in a 4-ft-deep pool at Avoki Resort Hotel in Thiruvananthapuram. Aasim, who hails from Kozhikode, suffers from Amelia, a birth disorder in which one or more limbs are missing. Aasim's achievement goes beyond his physical limitations and serves as an inspiration to millions. His trainer, Saji Valassery, inspired him to take up swimming lessons at the age of 15, and the teen has since surpassed 90% of his physical restrictions. Aasim considers Nick Vujicic, who has tetra-amelia syndrome, his role model. He said, "If he can swim, why can't I?" The young swimmer is determined to draw attention to the lack of facilities in his school, Velimanna Government Mappila UP, and hopes to upgrade it to a high school. Aasim has set a world record in 2019 by travelling from his school to the secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, a distance of over 450km, on his wheelchair in 52 days. At the event 'Unbelievable', organised by Different Art Centre in association with Avoki Resort, Aasim's achievement was applauded by everyone present, including the former leader of the Opposition, Ramesh Chennithala, who described it as amazing and extraordinary. Aasim's determination, positivity, and resilience in the face of adversity are a source of inspiration to millions worldwide. His story is a reminder that with a positive outlook and determination, we can overcome any obstacle, no matter how big or small.

An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram, Kerala has become the state's first female drone pilot to receive a license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for flying drones weighing up to 25kg. Rinsha Pattakal decided to take up drone flying lessons while waiting for admission to BTech in Civil Engineering. Rinsha credits the Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems Pvt Ltd organization in Ernakulam, which provides training to aspiring drone pilots in collaboration with the ASAP Kerala Community Skill Park in Kasaragod, for her success. Rinsha's father recognized the potential of drones in surveying and encouraged her to learn the skill. In addition to being the sole woman student in the ASAP’s first-ever drone flying training batch, Rinsha underwent rigorous training in small-category drone piloting. The comprehensive 96-hour executive program includes specialized training in 3D mapping, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey, UAV assembly and programming, and aerial cinematography, equipping students with a wide range of skills to excel in the dynamic drone industry. Drones are revolutionizing various fields and have diverse uses such as aerial surveillance, rescue operations, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring, firefighting, drone photography, videography, agriculture, and delivery services. In India, the DGCA Drone Remote Pilot Certificate is now a mandatory requirement for operating drones. The course at ASAP Kerala offers in-depth knowledge of drone flying rules and regulations, ensuring responsible and safe operations. Guardian of Mango Diversity: Kerala's Natural Farmer Preserves 300+ Rare Varieties on the Brink of Extinction

In a world where chemical fertilizers and pesticides have become synonymous with modern farming, M Shankaran Namboodiri, a natural farmer from Kerala, is on a mission to preserve and conserve 300-odd varieties of mangoes that are on the verge of extinction.  Namboodiri's farm, 'Moorthiyedath Mana', located near Sreekrishnapuram in Ottappalam taluk of Palakkad district, is a haven for the King of Fruits. He has been developing the garden since 1976 and has conserved mangoes from various parts of the world, including North Indian states and many native Kerala varieties.  What sets Namboodiri's farming practices apart is that he firmly believes that chemicals have no place in his three-and-a-half-acre compound. He has cultivated cardamom plants for domestic consumption and rears native breeds of cows like Ananganmala kullan and Vilwadhiri, both found in Palakkad district, Krishna Valley from Karnataka, and Kapila, found on the Kerala-Karnataka border, for generating biogas and using their dung as manure.  Namboodiri's efforts have not gone unnoticed. A former chief secretary who visited his farm in 2007 advised him to create awareness among the public on the need to conserve traditional plant varieties. Namboodiri's farm serves as an inspiration for many who aspire to preserve our rich agricultural heritage.

From Desolation to Delight: The Heartwarming Tale of TN's Villupuram Home

Shanthi Nilayam, a shelter for abandoned and runaway children in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, has been providing a safe haven for over 12,000 children in the last 34 years. Founded by Antony D’Cruz, who himself had a lost childhood, the shelter provides food, shelter, education, and guidance to children who have been abandoned or are in need of support. Many of the children who have found refuge at Shanthi Nilayam were rescued from Villupuram Railway Station, where they were abandoned. The shelter also rescues minors from the clutches of labour exploitation, and its teachers provide free classes even in rural areas and cemeteries near Dalit settlements. Shanthi Nilayam has guided children to enrol in technical education at ITIs and has sent a batch of 100 students between 2000 to 2017. The shelter has given a dignified life to 1,700 children this way. Through the shelter, D’Cruz has helped Dalit residents of Salamedu and Anna Nagar areas to avail financial aid for building houses and higher education. D’Cruz, who no longer keeps kids at the shelter, opens its doors for those who cannot afford tuition. He is committed to working for the rights of children and breaking the shackles of child labour. Shanthi Nilayam continues to be a beacon of hope for children in need of support and guidance, transforming the lives of many abandoned and runaway children.

Sharavanan Krishnamoorthy, also known as the "Sparrow Man of Sirkazhi," has dedicated his life to protecting and conserving the sparrow population in his hometown in Tamil Nadu, India. He is a 45-year-old civil engineer, who has been working to promote sparrow conservation for over a decade. Krishnamoorthy's efforts have included building hundreds of sparrow nests, educating local school children about the importance of sparrow conservation, and conducting sparrow census surveys in his community. He and his team of carpenters have made over 900 birdhouses in the past five years and distributed them across the country. The birdhouses are made of plywood and are non-toxic, also having a slot for wall mounting. The sparrow population in India has been in decline in recent years, with habitat loss and pollution among the major factors contributing to their dwindling numbers. Krishnamoorthy's work has helped to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these birds and preserving their habitats. As Krishnamoorthy continues his efforts to protect and conserve the sparrow population in Sirkazhi, he serves as an inspiration to others to take action and make a difference in their communities. His work is a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and protecting the biodiversity that sustains us all.

Reviving Hope: Rural Indian Community's Efforts Bring 'Dead' River Back to Life

The rejuvenation of the Kuttamperoor River in India is being hailed as a national example of how rural communities can come together to restore their local environment. A tributary of the Pampa and Achencoil rivers, the 4-mile-long Kuttamperoor River has for centuries been a source of life and drinking water for rural communities in Kerala. Irrigating more than 2,000 acres of rice paddy, and providing a lifeline for 500 fishermen families, the Kettamperoor River played a huge role in the local community. The river had become heavily polluted and choked with invasive water hyacinth, posing a major threat to the region's agriculture and fishing industries. However, 7,000 villagers from three communities donated around 30,000 man-hours of work to finish the initial clean up in just 2 months. They removed tons of debris and water hyacinth, and planted thousands of native plant species along the riverbanks. After that, the state government in Kerala on the southwest tip of India took over and created the conditions for life to return. They worked alongside the denizens of the river, who offered off up some of their land for a planned expansion of the river’s banks. The efforts of the Kuttamperoor community have paid off, with the river now teeming with fish and other aquatic life. The restoration project has also had a positive impact on the local economy, with farmers and fishermen now able to access clean water and maintain their livelihoods.

Against All Odds: The Inspiring Story of a Village's Fight to Save Its Cultural Legacy

Weddings in North India are known for their opulence, grandeur, and Bollywood-inspired flair, with glittery lehengas and groom's shoes stealing traditions often taking center stage. However, in a remote village nestled in the rugged Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, the natives refuse to conform to these imported practices.  Sumra, a village with around 80 houses and a population of approximately 300, is bucking the trend of modern wedding rituals that go against their traditions. The village has passed a resolution banning practices like cake-cutting, mehndi rituals, and joota chhipana, which are often seen in Punjabi and Bollywood-inspired weddings. The Kinnauri tribe, which makes up most of the inhabitants in the region, has a distinct culture influenced by Hindu, Buddhist, and indigenous beliefs and practices. The Hangrang Rinchen Buddhist Cultural Heritage Foundation, an association that takes all decisions relating to the tribe's culture and traditions, has been instrumental in leading the charge to preserve their heritage. Leaders of other gram panchayats have also agreed to pass similar resolutions in their villages. Although the wedding bans lack legal authority, the resolution represents a significant stride towards safeguarding the Kinnauri tribe's distinctive culture. Jagat Singh Negi, the Himachal Pradesh tribal development and revenue minister, has endorsed the resolution and underscored the importance of preserving the Kinnauri culture's valuable aspects. The resolution's passing signals mounting concerns over the erosion of local customs and the urgency of shielding them from the impact of external cultures. Sumra's resolve to protect its cultural heritage serves as an inspiration to other communities facing the same challenge. It is a reminder that despite modernization and globalization, traditions and heritage must be preserved to keep our identity intact. In a world that is becoming increasingly homogenized, the Kinnauri tribe is showing us that our cultural heritage is worth protecting.

Libraries in Remote Himalayan Villages Bring Tremendous Joy to First-Time Readers

While the school bell rings in the government school in Poth village of Uttarakhand, some of the children’s eyes brighten up as they continue to sit in their class to read their favourite stories. Thanks, to the libraries that have sprung up in many remote villages of the Himalayas, children have a new found love for reading. The children who are the first generation readers of these villages sing English songs and tell bedtime stories to their parents who don’t know to read and write. Children Inculcate Reading Habits Most families in these villages are farmers or are involved in the timber trade and they don’t know to read and write. However, their children have started to read fluently thanks to the libraries that have sprouted in many places.Dhanesh Kumar, a teacher in Poth village said that 21 students are members of the library which functions out of government school. There are around 1,647 libraries in schools, some situated in remote hills to encourage the reading habit in children. Reading Interests Children often read books from the library and their interests include collection of short stories and poems in Hindi. Books help students to read and understand better and enhances their mental development. Most of the students can now read more than 60 words per minute with ease. This was not possible before, but after the inception of libraries in these villages, children are getting smarter by reading books. Setting up libraries in remote villages is a remarkable story in itself as books had to be brought on the backs of mules or porters who would trudge through dense forests to reach these remote villages. However, their efforts were well rewarded when children who earlier used to tend animals with their parents are now reading books.

Rajasthan First State To Offer Email Address In Hindi

Millions of internet users in Rajasthan will now be able to use Hindi e-mail addresses. Rajasthan has become the first and the only state in India to offer free e-mail address in Hindi to its residents. This move will benefit all those who are not comfortable with English e-mail ids. Akhil Arora, principal secretary, department of information technology and communications informed about chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s intent to have a vernacular e-mail service for the residents who are not fluent in English as she felt that language should not be a barrier for anybody using emails or electronic communication. Subsequently, the vernacular e-mail, in Hindi, was launched on December 3. The first e-mail id in Hindi was created for the chief minister, Vasundhara@rajasthan.bharat (in Devnagari). Soon, all government personnel in the state will also have Hindi e-mail id.  According to a senior official, the state IT department implemented this project with a partnership in form of in-sourcing with private IT companies. After three months of dedicated efforts from a team of ten experts, Hindi e-mail ids became a reality. The email also works for people who use English keyboard. This is a major achievement for the state as even the Japanese who like to work in their own language don’t have an email id in their own language.

Conservative Friends of India released a video featuring Theresa May titled “Theresa Ke Sath”. The video is to attract votes from British Indians in the upcoming election on June 8. The video conveys the message of joining hands with Theresa May and is full of praises of her. It illustrates her previous visits to India and to various Indian sites. Also, it features her interactions with Indian political leaders and also her previous and recent meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. British Indian support Tories. The Tory video also features Theresa May hosting representatives of the British Indian community. Supporters showed their appreciation and joy over the video. Chairman of the Conservative Friends of India conveyed that the video must reach to as many British Indians as possible so that the election on June 8 turns out to be in favour of Theresa May and the Conservatives. A similar video was made by the Conservative Friends of India for David Cameron for his 2015 elections. There are about 16 lakh Indians in Britain and obviously, have a major role in deciding who will get elected to the Parliament. Hope this jingle works in Theresa May’s favour as it had for David Cameron.
