Sharavanan Krishnamoorthy, also known as the "Sparrow Man of Sirkazhi," has dedicated his life to protecting and conserving the sparrow population in his hometown in Tamil Nadu, India. He is a 45-year-old civil engineer, who has been working to promote sparrow conservation for over a decade.
Krishnamoorthy's efforts have included building hundreds of sparrow nests, educating local school children about the importance of sparrow conservation, and conducting sparrow census surveys in his community. He and his team of carpenters have made over 900 birdhouses in the past five years and distributed them across the country. The birdhouses are made of plywood and are non-toxic, also having a slot for wall mounting.
The sparrow population in India has been in decline in recent years, with habitat loss and pollution among the major factors contributing to their dwindling numbers. Krishnamoorthy's work has helped to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these birds and preserving their habitats.
