Cleaner Air, Healthier Lakes: Gujarat Rolls Out ‘Lake and Air Watch’ for Sustainable Cities
As cities grow rapidly, they face new environmental challenges, from polluted water bodies to rising air pollution. Recognising the urgency of these issues, the Government of Gujarat has launched an ambitious environmental monitoring initiative called ‘Lake and Air Watch.’ Introduced under the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM) by the state’s Urban Development and Urban Housing Department, the programme aims to track the health of urban lakes and monitor air quality in real time. By combining modern technology with environmental governance, the initiative reflects Gujarat’s commitment to sustainable development and aligns with India’s broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’—a developed and environmentally responsible nation.Rising Environmental Challenges in Urban IndiaUrbanisation has transformed Indian cities over the past few decades. While it has brought economic growth and better infrastructure, it has also placed enormous pressure on natural ecosystems. Urban lakes, which once served as crucial water sources and ecological habitats, are now increasingly threatened. Many have been affected by pollution, encroachment, waste dumping, and excessive siltation, leading to a decline in water quality and reduced groundwater recharge. At the same time, densely populated urban areas are experiencing worsening air pollution due to traffic emissions, construction activity, and industrial growth. These environmental issues directly affect public health, urban climate, and the overall quality of life. The ‘Lake and Air Watch’ initiative has been designed to address these concerns through systematic monitoring and faster response mechanisms.Satellite Technology to Protect Urban LakesOne of the most innovative aspects of the initiative is the use of satellite technology to monitor the health of lakes across cities. Satellites will track several important environmental indicators, including changes in lake surface area, accumulation of waste and pollutants, and growth of algae and vegetation. Whenever unusual patterns are detected, the system will generate automatic alerts, enabling authorities to take immediate action. This could include cleaning operations, pollution control measures, or ecological restoration activities. Under the programme, air quality monitoring stations will be installed across the state in 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipal areas. The AQI is an important environmental indicator that reflects how polluted the air is and how it may affect human health. High AQI levels can cause respiratory issues, heart problems, and other health complications. With real-time monitoring, the system will issue instant alerts if pollution levels rise beyond safe limits. This will enable authorities to quickly implement corrective actions such as regulating emissions, controlling construction dust, or enforcing pollution control measures. Such proactive monitoring can significantly improve urban air quality and protect the health of millions of residents.A Digital Dashboard for Environmental ManagementA key feature of the ‘Lake and Air Watch’ initiative is the creation of a centralised digital platform. All data related to lake conditions and air quality will be integrated into a state-level environmental dashboard. This platform will display maps, environmental trends, alerts, and operational updates. The dashboard will help government departments coordinate their actions more effectively. Instead of working in isolation, different agencies will be able to access shared data and respond quickly to environmental threats. Importantly, the platform will also make environmental information available to citizens.
