Ten-Year-Old’s Debut Novel ‘The Unknown Friend’ Is Making Waves
As a child, Charunainika loved to listen to stories that her grandmother told her but she never imagined that one day she would be weaving stories that would enthrall her readers. She is still a little girl, but doing big things as her novella ‘The Unknown Friend’ has become a sensation in the literary world. Charunainika is a Class V student residing in Kozhikode, Kerala. She loves to read and review books on her personal YouTube channel named Doodle Charu. One of her favorite reviews was for the Australian author and illustrator Peter Carnavas' book 'The Elephant.' The review caught the attention of the author himself who wrote her an email motivating her to read more and even write her own stories. Charunainika was thrilled by the response and there was no looking back. Her imagination fired and she came out with this splendid book which in her words is a ‘Dish of realism with a garnish of fantasy’. When she is not writing, she loves to draw and that is why she came up with her own illustrations for the book. Her mother Anjali Chandran said that she was surprised to read about the life experiences shared in the book and realized that we should not underestimate children’s minds. She gives credit to Father Dr. Biju John Vellakkada, Charu's school's principal, for inspiring her to write down her thoughts and experiences at such a young age.
