Know Which State Claims the Throne in Matters of Food Safety
In a remarkable feat, Kerala has emerged as the undisputed leader in food safety, securing the top spot in the fifth State Food Safety Index. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, on the occasion of World Food Safety Day. The State Food Safety Index evaluates the performance of states and union territories on six key aspects of food safety. Among the larger states, Kerala claimed the prestigious first position, closely followed by Punjab and Tamil Nadu. In the category of smaller states, Goa took the lead, with Manipur and Sikkim following suit. Notably, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and Chandigarh excelled among the union territories, securing the top three ranks. Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his delight on Twitter, hailing this achievement as historic. He attributed the success to the implementation of initiatives such as the food safety grama panchayat scheme in 140 panchayats and the Safe and Nutritious Food at School project in 500 schools. Furthermore, the state conducted numerous food safety awareness classes for the general public, contributing to this milestone. State Health Minister Veena George highlighted that Kerala's food safety department also witnessed a significant increase in revenue during the 2022-23 financial year, doubling compared to the previous year. Dr Mandaviya further announced ambitious plans to train 2.5 million food business operators in the next three years, ensuring adherence to food quality standards across the nation. Additionally, he revealed the establishment of 100 Food Streets nationwide, where impeccable food safety, hygiene, and nutrition standards will be maintained. Emphasizing the vital connection between food quality and overall wellness, Dr Mandaviya highlighted the significance of maintaining high food safety standards.
