Celebrating Bessie Coleman: Barbie Honors American Pioneer with New Doll

Bessie Coleman was a true inspiration, an American pioneer who was the first black and native American female aviator, and the first black person to ever earn an international pilot's license. Her remarkable achievements are now being honored by toy maker Barbie, with the launch of a new doll in their ‘Inspiring Women’ range. The doll wears a brown hat featuring her historic initials- BC- an olive green aviator suit with a belt and lace-up boots, all resembling the iconic attire worn by Coleman. Her great niece Gigi Coleman, President of the Bessie Coleman Aviation All-Stars, was involved in creating the doll and shared her thoughts on the tribute: “Keeping Bessie’s legacy alive has always been a labor of love for my family, and we are proud to recognize her determination and accomplishments for black women in aviation and continue to share my great aunt's pioneering spirit with fans of all ages.” Bessie is a fantastic icon to encourage kids all around the world to fly to greater heights, said Lisa Mcknight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie & Dolls at Mattel, in a statement during the launch. The Bessie Coleman doll is a fitting tribute to a woman who achieved something extraordinary and set an example for generations to come. It is a great way to keep her legacy alive and to encourage young people to explore the possibilities of a career in aviation.
