A Gateway to Paradise: Port Blair's New Integrated Terminal Enhances Connectivity
In a momentous virtual inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new integrated terminal building (NITB) at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Joined by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister VK Singh, and other esteemed officials, the event marked a significant step towards enhancing connectivity to the islands. The state-of-the-art terminal, shaped like a shell to reflect the islands' natural beauty, is a marvel of eco-friendly design. It boasts 100% natural lighting for 12 hours a day through strategically placed skylights on the roof, reducing energy consumption. Moreover, the terminal incorporates eco-conscious features like rainwater catchment, an on-site sewage treatment plant, and a 500 KW solar power plant, ensuring minimal impact on the islands' environment. One of the terminal's remarkable highlights is the apron, capable of accommodating two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft simultaneously, making it suitable for parking up to 10 aircraft at a time. With such upgraded infrastructure, Port Blair Airport is set to handle increased air traffic, offering a gateway to the mesmerizing Andaman and Nicobar Islands for tourists from around the world. The new integrated terminal boasts a total built-up area of 40,837 square meters, providing ample space for 1,200 passengers during peak hours and approximately 40 lakh passengers annually. It features 28 check-in counters, three passenger boarding bridges, and four conveyor belts, streamlining the travel experience for visitors. Constructed by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of ₹707.73 crore, this cutting-edge terminal is not only a symbol of progress but also a source of hope for the local community. It is expected to generate enhanced employment opportunities, giving a much-needed boost to the regional economy. As travelers step into this architectural marvel, they embark on a journey that seamlessly blends modernity with nature's pristine beauty.
