Let’s Make the Twilight Years Wonderful for Senior Citizens
Nikita is an independent young woman who works from home. One rainy day, she dropped her child in school and returned home to commence her work. As it was raining heavily, the electricity supply got snapped after a few hours, and the Wi-Fi connection got disabled which interrupted her work. Nikita, therefore, decided to stop her office work and attend to her pending household chores. The phone rang and she was happy to see the call from ‘Amma’. Her parents stayed alone in the same town and she daily called them to check on them. A little while into the conversation, Nikita enquired about her father who had recently turned 78. Her mother said that the weather has become cold due to the incessant rains and Nikita’s father is yearning to eat hot samosas. However, the pounding rain was acting as a deterrent and confined them to their home. Nikita also told them not to go out in the rain. After attending to the call, Nikita continued to clean the house, but she couldn’t subdue the thought that was constantly arising in her mind – that her father wanted to eat samosas. She recollected how when she was a child, her father would cater to even her smallest and insignificant demands. In a moment of urgency, she donned her raincoat, took the keys of her scooter and darted out of the house to buy samosas from a famous shop nearby. It was around 5 in the evening and the doorbell rang. As Nikita’s mother was in the kitchen making the evening tea, her father opened the door and was pleasantly surprised. He saw Nikita wet and dripping, but smiling and holding a parcel of piping hot samosas. His joy knew no bounds, not because he got what he wanted but because he was touched by his daughter’s kindness and love. Nikita’s parents were overwhelmed by her thoughtful and caring gesture and they all sat joyfully to enjoy the samosas and tea. For a long time, Nikita couldn’t forget the expression of surprise and joy on her parent’s face. She felt very fulfilled and satisfied as never before. Believe me, there is great joy in giving your time to people who are in the twilight years of their life. All they want is your companionship as they live lonely lives. Today is ‘World Senior Citizen Day’. If you don’t have elders at home, brighten up a senior citizen’s day in your neighborhood and see the difference it brings to your life.
