Her Love for Dogs Culminated Into an Amazing Career as a Canine Behaviorist
A canine behaviorist is an absolutely satisfying profession if you are in love with dogs. Canine behaviorists, also called dog trainers teach dogs to adapt to human communication and to respond to many commands and situations. Shirin Merchant is one such canine behaviourist who has 24 years experience and has revolutionized dog training techniques in India and has helped people to understand and enjoy their pets better than ever. Passionate About Dogs As a child, Shirin was absolutely in love with dogs and would sneak puppies into her home. In 1995, she attended a workshop by world-renowned canine behaviorist and trainer John Rogerson from England. Soon, Shirin was on a flight to England and spent four years over there studying canine psychology, competing in working trials and learning from best trainers in the country. She returned to India and disheartened by the primitive and abusive ways of training dogs, she founded ‘Canines Can Care’. Canines Can Care Canines Can Care is a one-of-its-kind organization established by Shirin that is centered entirely on dog-related activities. It trains dogs to provide assistance to people with disabilities. Such dogs can retrieve objects, open heavy doors, switch on and switch off lights, pull wheelchairs, get help in case of an emergency and similar other tasks. In fact, the Canines Can Care search dog team provided its valuable services in the aftermath of the Bhuj earthquake. For her persistent efforts with canines and educating people about their behavior, Shirin has won many laurels. Shirin was awarded the prestigious International Commendation award for Trainer of The Year by the KCAI, Kennel Club of England accreditation scheme for dog trainers and behaviorists.
