This Odisha Hospital Sets a Good Example by Employing Transgenders As Security Guards
The Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Odisha has taken a significant step to make society more inclusive and to empower the LGBTQIA+ community members by hiring five transgender individuals as security guards. he five transgenders are delighted at this opportunity of working in a hospital and being able to lead an independent life. They are appointed as security guards at gynaecology and paediatric wards of the hospital and are entitled to a remuneration of Rs 6000 to Rs 7000 with insurance and other facilities. The transgenders were appointed under the Nirmal scheme. The Malkangiri District Police trained them before they were absorbed into the hospital. According to a report in Sambad English, there are various schemes under the Nirmal Yojna which also includes providing jobs to third gender people. One of the security guards names Kailash Dora said that after undergoing training for 15 days, he joined the hospital and was very happy about it. He works in the hospital for eight hours and takes care of patients. This important step under the Nirmal Yojna to employ transgender individuals in the health sector will go a long way in making society inclusive and enabling the third gender community to lead a life of dignity.
