Coimbatore’s PSG Hospital achieves a groundbreaking feat with 10 robotic surgeries in a single day!

PSG Hospital in Coimbatore has achieved something extraordinary: performing 10 robotic surgeries in a single day, a feat unmatched by any other hospital in India. The surgeries weren't all the same kind. They fixed three hernias, took out six gallbladders, and did one small cut surgery for cancer in the uterus. Remarkably, all patients recovered quickly and were discharged within four days. Dr Bhuvaneswaran JS, who's in charge at PSG Hospitals, said, "We couldn't have done this cool thing without everyone working together." He went on, "The team-up between surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other workers made sure everything went smoothly." Robotic Surgery isn't Just a Big-City Thing Anymore ~ PSG Hospital is demonstrating that robotic surgery is becoming prevalent in smaller towns too. This technology offers numerous benefits for doctors, including increased comfort and reduced fatigue during long operations. Dr S Rajesh Kumar one of the surgeons, said, "Robotic-assisted surgery allows for more precise movements and better visualization compared to traditional methods." He also mentioned, "This can lead to improved patient outcomes and faster recovery times." For regular surgeries like fixing hernias, robots help doctors see better and cut down on problems and the chance of the hernia coming back. It's also great for older patients because it doesn't need big cuts, so they heal quicker. Dr Rajkumar K S, who was in charge of the robot-assisted surgery for uterine cancer, talked about how it helps in women's health procedures. "Robot-assisted surgery lets us make tinier cuts, which means less chance of getting an infection and getting back on your feet quicker," he said. Robots with Whiskers: Inspired by Nature for Enhanced Navigation

While rangefinders, cameras, and lasers are now used by autonomous robots for navigation, whiskers could be an inexpensive addition that helps avoid some very costly mishaps. Not only do cats and mice have whiskers, but many other mammals do as well, such as all non-human primates and a large number of marine creatures like seals and dugongs. This biological diffusion can only indicate one thing: whiskers are really helpful. Indeed, they help animals move more stealthily and perceive their surroundings more clearly. A set of 3D-printed whiskers that Australian engineers have developed should help robots learn more about their environment. especially in blind areas, or to determine the type, weight, and shape of an object that is in their way. With an emphasis on taking robots out of the lab and into the real world, co-inventor Dr. Russell Brinkworth, an associate professor in autonomous systems at Flinders University, stated that he and his colleagues would want to see these whiskers behave similarly to human fingertips. Dr. Russell Brinkworth on the left  and Simon Pegoli on the right (Source: Google Images)  Further Inputs On Lastest Discovery ~  “These 3D printed sensor whiskers could be fitted at low cost and give robots many useful additional capacities,” he told Cosmos Magazine. “Every space is different, so giving robots effective tactile sensor systems to map their tasks and ‘visualize’ movement in their range will advance their abilities,” adds Simon Pegoli, a Ph.D. candidate at Flinders University, and lead author on a paper published in Sensors and Actuators. The two have optimized the whisker shape and attachment mechanism using mechanical beam theory, which should keep prices down and usefulness up. With their long and flexible whiskers, robots operating in crowded areas such as shipping or receiving stations in warehouses would have a useful tool for determining the weight and hardness of objects they encounter, which might potentially avoid collisions altogether. Animals and their adaptations are frequently touted as examples of brilliant engineering and problem-solving as the field of robotics grows and diversifies.  Previous robots that GNN has covered include a rolling medical supply delivery robot modeled after a pangolin, an off-world rover that spirals like a snake, and pollination fairy robots that are modeled after wind-blown seeds from plants like dandelions.

Scientists create nanobots to deliver medicines

Scientists have developed nanorobots that are very tiny structures built by using DNA. As DNA stores vast information, structures built from it can be used to perform tasks like delivering medicines throughout the body or transport gene-editing tools. In a press release, Lulu Qian, a bioengineering professor at the California Institute of Technology and one of the study’s authors explained that just as electromechanical robots are sent off to faraway places, like Mars, they would like to send molecular robots to minuscule places where humans can’t go, such as the bloodstream. She informed that their aim was to design and build a molecular robot that could perform a sophisticated nanomechanical task: cargo sorting. Scientists worked towards creating robots that could pick up and sort molecules within a designated space. To achieve this aim, they used a single strand of DNA to create a three-part DNA robot. The robot has a “leg” with a pair of feet. An “arm” with a “hand” allowed it to carry cargo, and they added a third component to tell the hand when a specific drop-off point had been reached so it would know to release the cargo. They created and successfully tested the robots which have an 80 percent chance of accurately delivering their cargo. Qian hopes that other researchers could use these principles for exciting applications, such as using a DNA robot for synthesizing a therapeutic chemical from its constituent parts in an artificial molecular factory, delivering a drug only when a specific signal is given in bloodstreams or cells, or sorting molecular components in trash for recycling.

Disney Theme Park to introduce humanoid robots to entertain kids

Apart from the popular Disney characters like Mickey, Donald and Goofy, Disney theme parks will soon introduce humanoid robots to entertain visitors. The company has  filed a patent application for soft body robot that can safely interact with young people. The robot is designed to be huggable and interactive. The prototypes of the robot have already been tested by the Disney engineers. Based on the Big Hero 6 character Baymax, the Disney researchers have developed a small test robot with a soft and durable outer shell. Its upper body is filled with fluid and it can be programmed by a controller. There is a pressure sensor to which each part of the test robot is connected so that it enables safe interaction with young children. With the inroduction of humanoid robots, the days of actual humans interacting with young people at Disneyland theme parks could be numbered. A patent application doesn't necessarily mean such a product would ever see the light of day. The patent document concedes that it is difficult to provide  wholly safe interactions between humans and robots simply by operating these humanoid and other robots with controlled movements. Researchers have explained in the patent document that robots are being used to provide interactive guidance or entertainment in stores  and amusement parks as well as in homes, schools, hospitals, and the workplace where they teach, provide therapy, and lend an extra set of hands.
