A New Milestone In Philanthropy

Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Mittal on Thursday said the Bharti family has pledged 10 percent of their wealth totaling Rs 7,000 crore in support of various activities undertaken by Bharti foundation which is the Group’s philanthropic arm. At a conference, Sunil Mittal stated that the Bharti family is all set to establish the Satya Bharti University that will offer free education to underprivileged youth from economically weaker sections of the society. The new-age university that is expected to come up in North India will focus on science and technology. It will conduct courses specializing in Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and robotics among others. The first academic session of the university will commence in 2021. Mittal informed that most of the wealth pledged will be used for setting up the university and talks are on to finalise the land for the same. He added that over a period of time, the university will cater to around 10,000 students. Mittal's philanthropic move comes just days after Infosys co-founder and tech titan Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini Nilekani committed half of their wealth to philanthropy by signing the Giving Pledge initiative sponsored by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, an invitation to the world's wealthiest to donate a majority of their wealth to charity.
