Hyderabad opens country’s first ever pediatric dermatology
The state run Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad has opened the country’s first ever super specialty department for pediatric dermatology. It had been receiving innumerable cases of congenital and genetic dermatological problems in children. Authorities said that this is a highly specialized facility for kids which is not available even in private sector. The department was launched on Thursday. Dr. Shravan Kumar, superintendent, Gandhi Hospital explained that children have to be tackled differently while treating their dermatological problems as their behaviour is different from adults. An increase in cases of many skin conditions also prompted the setting up of an outpatient department for dermatosurgery at the hospital because such cases need specialized set up of an operation theatre. Dr. Kumar said that since there is a rise in dermatology cases, efforts are being taken to enhance the existing facilities with advanced technology. There have been many advancements in dermatology, including cosmetic dermatology which is conducted in private hospitals at exorbitant rates. Setting up this department in Gandhi hospital will enable the economically backward sections to avail such facilities. Apart from skin transplantation which is already being done at the hospital, the authorities also have plans to bring advanced treatment options like hair transplantation for the benefit of patients.
