Better highway patrolling could reduce DUI, say Hotel Owners affected by banning the sale of liquor within 500 meters of the highway.
By augmenting existing highway patrolling, DUI (Driving under the influence) could be brought under control, feel the affected hotel owners. Banning liquor may not help stop DUI (Driving under the influence) on highways, says Rishu Baweja, founder of hotel chain Punjab Rasoi and whose hotel in Ravat will be affected by the new law banning the sale of liquor within 500 meters of the highway. Rishu Baweja also said that people who are traveling by highways can source liquor easily from elsewhere if is not available on highways. Only better patrolling on highways can reduce DUI cases. Police can step up Sobriety checkpoints on tollbooth on highways. So police can take the breathing test of drivers before they can enter any state or national highway, by setting up sobriety checkpoints on toll booth. By conducting breathalyzer test while the driver is paying the toll, we can avoid any different queues for DUI testing. This will help reduce any traffic jam on the highway. Rishu further added that almost 70 people will be unemployed from his hotel in Ravat because of the banning sale of liquor within 500 meters of the highway. It will be very hard for these employees to find any new work, as most of them are uneducated, semi or unskilled workers. Many of them are sole earning person in their homes. It will hit their families very hard.
