New Airport Terminals at Important Cities
As increasing number of people prefer to travel by airways, there has been a sharp rise in flyers, due to which the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to start modernization projects at Lucknow, Deoghar, Rajkot and Allahabad airports. The Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, Lucknow will get a new integrated passenger terminal building that will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,230 crore to cope with the increasing passenger traffic during last five years. According to the AAI, the new terminal will be able to handle 4,000 passengers during peak hours and 63.5 lakh passengers per annum. A new passenger terminal is expected to come up in Allahabad and will be made operational before the 'Ardh Kumbh Mela' of January 2019 that attracts a large number of tourists. It will be built at a cost of Rs 125.8 crore. For the past few years, the Saurashtra region of Gujarat has witnessed growing economic activity as well as a distinguished population profile having a very high number (50%) of total NRIs of Gujarat. As the present airport is incapable of handling the rising passenger traffic due to capacity constraints, the AAI will take up the work of development of greenfield airport at Hirasar, Rajkot on build, operate and maintain basis.
