Awareness Campaign About Canine Friends
Rajkumar was on an evening walk in Thiruvananthapuram when he realized that residents need to be aware of the behaviour of dogs. He noticed a puppy pouncing on a child in a playful manner which actually frightened the child. He later came to know that the puppy was killed as people thought it was about to bite the child. Following this and several other such incidents showing apathy towards dogs, made 'Hands for Paws' organize an educative session for city residents on behaviour of dogs on Saturday. Hands for Paws is a collective of Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organization (FIAPO), People For Animals Thiruvananthapuram, Street Dog Watch Association, many NGOs and animal lovers. The session organized by 'Hands for Paws' will educate dog owners as well as citizens on how to behave towards a dog, how to avoid a dog bite, ways to train and nurture dogs, to understand the common behavioural issues of dogs and methods to solve them. Their aim is to reduce the ill treatment towards dogs by spreading awareness. Kumar, one of the organizers of Hands for Paws said that people do not know how to behave when they see a barking dog. They usually start running or try to attack the dogs leading to grave consequences. He said that with proper awareness and knowledge, such problems can be reduced to a great extent. The group will also give parenting training to the pet owners so that a healthy bond is formed between them and the dogs so that owners don’t abandon puppies and know how to look after them.
