A River of Hope: Bhadra Water Reaches Gonur Lake in Karnataka, Farmers Rejoice

For the farmers of Chitradurga in Karnataka, watching water flow into Gonur Lake was more than a sight—it was a moment of hope. Water released from the Bhadra Reservoir as part of the Upper Bhadra Project reached the lake in Chitradurga taluk around 3 pm on Wednesday, sending farmers and residents into celebration.Women performed Ganga pooja along the canal. Some people were visibly emotional as they watched the water make its way down Gonur hill towards the lake. For a region that has endured severe drought, the water was welcomed as a lifeline.A 164-Km JourneyThe trial flow travelled an impressive 164 km from the Bhadra Reservoir to the designated point near Gonur. Water first travelled around 50 km from the reservoir to the Ajjampura ‘Y’ junction in Tarikere taluk, where the Chitradurga Branch Canal (CBC) branches off.From there, it travelled another 114 km through the CBC, passing through several drought-hit areas before reaching Gonur. The water reached Sanehalli in Hosadurga taluk on Tuesday before entering Hiriyur. By Wednesday afternoon, it reached Kyadigere in Chitradurga taluk and then flowed through the canal built across Gonur hill to finally reach the lake.The arrival of the water carried deep emotional meaning for local farmers. One farmer said that he never thought that they all would see Bhadra water in their lifetime, recalling years of uncertainty and unfulfilled expectations.Gonur Lake OverflowsThe impact was almost immediate. Deccan Herald reported that as Gonur Lake was already full, it began overflowing within just two hours of receiving the water. The flow then moved towards Dyamavvanahalli. Officials said seven to eight more lakes, extending up to Rani Lake in Challakere taluk, are expected to benefit along the same stretch. Around 700 cusecs of water is currently being released daily, with more than 100 lakes, including 20 in Tarikere taluk, expected to receive water.With the initial trial flow successfully completed, the next goal is to finish the Gonur aqueduct works and extend the water towards Challakere, Molakalmuru, Jagalur and Pavagada.For Chitradurga’s farmers, the journey of Bhadra water has brought something precious—not just water, but renewed hope for the land and the lives that depend on it.
