History Created As First Indian Woman Pilot Inducted In Indian Navy

The Indian navy has been inducting female officers since 1991, but now the areas of induction have expanded and on Wednesday, it created history as Shubhangi Swaroop became the first woman pilot to be inducted in the Indian Navy. The first batch of female officers was also inducted at the Naval Armament Inspection (NAI) branch which was so far considered a male bastion. The induction ceremony took place in the Indian Naval Academy in Kannur, Kerala in which as many as 328 cadets of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and two overseas cadets, one each from Tanzania and Maldives, passed out on successful completion of their courses. Shubhangi Swaroop was elated on becoming the first women pilot and stated that it was not only an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also. Shubhangi who hails from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh will undergo the pilot training at Dundigal Air Force Academy in Hyderabad. Aastha Segal, Roopa A and Sakthimaya S, who have been inducted into the NAI branch said that more women are interested to join the defence forces and this achievement will be an inspiration for others. Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba, who reviewed the passing out parade said the INA has been designed to instill discipline, professionalism, courage and camaraderie among the young officers. Medals were awarded to nine meritorious midshipmen and cadets after the ceremonial review.
