Indian Scientist Wins Accolades As Top Talent in Biology in Europe
Bengaluru-born Dr. Mahima Swamy has been selected to join the elite European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Young Investigator network, establishing her as one of Europe's top biological talents. Dr Swamy is one of the most respected experts at the University of Dundee's School of Life Sciences, where she is in charge of a team that studies intestinal immune responses. Mahima joins 23 other researchers to join the network of 135 present and 390 previous members of the EMBO program, which is housed under the university's Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU). Dr Swamy’s study focuses on how to effectively use the gut immune system to defend against harmful invasion while also preventing gut damage. Professor Dario Alessi, Director of the MRC-PPU, said that it was a well-deserved recognition and a significant boost for the crucial study that Mahima was performing on elucidating the biological roles of the enigmatic Intraepithelial lymphocytes that patrol the intestinal epithelium. In a statement, Mahima said, "I am very grateful to my lab and my mentors for the support that gained me this prize. I feel that being a part of this distinguished organization will improve our study significantly.” She added that she was excited to be a member of the prestigious network and was looking forward to meeting all the young researchers of Europe.
