Breaking Barriers: Woman Naval Air Operations Officer To Head Navy’s R-Day Contingent

This year, women's power will be on display at the Republic Day celebrations as the Indian Navy's Republic Day contingent of 144 young sailors will be led by Lt Commander Disha Amrith, a female naval air operations official and its tableau will highlight the "Nari Shakti" in the force. Along with Amrith, Sub Lt Valli Meena S will be one of the three platoon leaders for the navy contingent. Amrith, 29, graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from BMS College of Engineering in Karnataka. She was a member of the National Cadet Corps Republic Day team in 2008 and had always hoped to march with one of the three armed forces during the celebrations in Delhi. The officer, a native of Mangalore, enlisted in the Navy in 2016 and, after finishing her training in 2017, was assigned to a significant naval base in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Speaking to PTI Amrith said that she is an aviator for Dornier aircraft and had been carrying out sorties in the plane. When questioned about the difficulties faced by women in the military, Amrith responded that she became stronger physically, and mentally, and is now more self-driven. She added that she was proud to be a part of the Navy and would continue to serve the Navy with full zeal and dedication.

Shaliza Dhami Becomes India’s First Female Flight Commander

Shaliza Dhami accomplished a milestone and became a source of inspiration for many young girls when she became India’s first female flight commander. Achievements Shaliza Dhami is a Wing Commander who has clocked over 23,000 flying hours. She has been serving in the Air Force for 15 years. She is the first woman officer to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit. Flight Commander is second in command of the unit. She also became the first female Qualified Flying Instructor and is also first woman officer to get a permanent commission of the flying branch after the Supreme Court gave women officers this legal right in March 2019. Commendable Feat Shaliza has been constantly shattering the glass ceiling to achieve great heights in her career. Dhami took over as Flight Commander of a Chetak helicopter unit at Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The helicopter is used for commuting, transporting cargo/material, for casualty evacuation, Search and Rescue (SAR), Aerial Survey and Patrolling, Emergency Medical Services, Off-shore operations and Underslung operations. As a young girl growing up in Ludhiana, Shaliza dreamed of joining the air force. Shaliza, who is also the mother of a nine-year-old girl was not only able to realize her dream but also paved the way for many ambitious women to think big and achieve their dreams. India's Pride Anny Divya, a youngest commander of Boeing 777 in the world

Anny Divya, made India proud when she became the youngest female commander of a Boeing 777 aircraft in the world. She is an inspiration for many as she chose a different path and profession to fulfill her dreams of becoming a pilot. Anny Divya gained the title of commander at just 30 years old, overcoming her humble beginnings to realize her dream to become a pilot, a profession which met with resistance from her local community. Divya who became a commander at the age of 30 was fortunate to have very supportive parents who stood by her even when a lot of people dissuade them from sending her for flying lessons. They also arranged to pay for the exorbitant fees so that their daughter can fly. Divya, who hails from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh was educated at the Kendriya Vidyalaya. Since her childhood, she dreamt of becoming a pilot and while her classmates chose to become engineers and doctors at the advice of their parents, Divya took the different path. When Divya was just 17, she enrolled with the flying school Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi. Her hard work helped her secure a scholarship and she completed her training when she was 19. Then she was employed by Air India where she continued her steady rise up the ranks, learning to fly a Boeing 737 in Spain before completing advanced training in London which saw her fly a Boeing 777, the world’s largest twin jet.  She earned a degree in BSc Aviation while working with Air India. She chose the road less travelled and succeeded. She will be an inspiration for many.
