From Dream to Reality: NOC Secured for Kerala’s First Low-Cost Airline
The dream of a dedicated low-cost airline service connecting Kerala with the Gulf region has inched closer to reality. Dubai-based Malayali entrepreneurs behind the project 'Air Kerala' have achieved a significant milestone by obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA). A Dream Realized The brainchild of Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada, co-founders of Zettfly Aviation, Air Kerala aims to revolutionize air travel by making it affordable and accessible. "The NOC is just the first step in this journey," says Afi Ahmed, outlining their ambitious plans. Headquartered in Kochi, the airline will initially operate domestic flights within Kerala, using ATR 72-600 aircraft. The necessary Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from MoCA is expected within the next eight to nine months. Domestic Focus, Regional Impact Ahmed explained that once they procure the aircraft, Air Kerala would commence regional operations before branching out internationally. The initial strategy focuses on connecting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with major Tier 1 cities in southern India. Starting with three ATR 72-600 aircraft, the airline plans to address a significant gap in the market, enhancing connectivity and convenience for travelers. A Vision Years in the Making The concept of Air Kerala isn't new. It was first envisioned by the Kerala Government in 2005 but never took off. The prolonged delay inspired Ahmed and Kallada to take matters into their own hands, acquiring the domain airkerala.com and setting the stage for India’s first ultra-low-cost airline owned by expatriates. Ahmed said that seeing the domain was available, they had decided to launch their own airline. With over 25 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry, Ahmed, a native of Kannur and founder of UAE-based Smart Travels, brings a wealth of expertise to the venture. Competing in a Crowded Market Despite the presence of established private airlines like Vistara and IndiGo, Ahmed is confident about Air Kerala's unique value proposition. "Even with four airports, Kerala doesn't have its own airline," he points out, highlighting the untapped potential. International Ambitions While the initial focus is on domestic routes, Air Kerala has its sights set on international expansion. "Once the fleet grows to 20 aircraft, we will explore international routes, starting with Dubai," Ahmed reveals. This phased approach ensures a strong foundation is built before venturing into the competitive international market. Air Kerala aims to serve the large expatriate population from Kerala living in the Gulf, offering them an affordable and convenient travel option back home. It aims to fulfill the long-pending demand of the Malayali community and set a new standard in affordable air travel. By turning a long-held dream into reality, Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada are paving the way for a new era of affordable and accessible air travel, bridging distances and bringing communities closer together.
