The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has added another feather to its cap by going totally green. The CSMIA launched hybrid technology in India for the first time in April 2022 that only uses green energy. The CSMIA's sustainable project is an initiative of the airport's efforts to lessen its carbon footprint and advance toward "Net Zero" emissions.
According to a CSMIA representative, the global aviation industry can do a lot to support sustainability pillars like the environment, social and economic. The future depends on the sustainable work that is performed today and continued dedication to sustainable aims.
To increase its use of renewable energy, the CSMIA in April 2022 installed a 10 Kwp Hybrid Solar Mill made up of a 2 Kwp Turbo Mill (3 Savonious type VAWT) and an 8 Kwp Solar PV module array with an expected minimum energy generation of 36 Kwh per day. This ground-breaking, completely integrated hybrid renewable energy solution uses a combination of solar and wind energy to produce power. The CSMIA's goal of reaching Net Zero by the year 2029 will be closer thanks to this environmentally friendly switch to renewable energy, which will result in annual reductions of about 1 lakh 20,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO 2 e).
As the CSMIA intends to reach net zero by 2029, this landmark occasion further motivates them to stay dedicated to their efforts to improve the operational efficiency of the airport while running entirely on renewable energy.
