In a bid to encourage youngster to be a part of the voting process, now students while seeking the admission will be asked if enrolled for the Voter’s ID.
University of Mumbai has asked all the colleges affiliated to them, to ask students their whereabouts if the students have enrolled their name own voters ID list.
Usually, for their higher education, students complete 18 years of age, therefore adding this question in the admission form will help the colleges also to know if the students seeking admission have voter’s ID or at least applied for.
Making voter’s ID mandatory for the admission is still to be discussed but the question is likely to be added in the admission form.
While many principals in the city believe that it is a good move by the University to increase the interest of elections among students but making it mandatory for the admission might raise eyebrows as one cannot disqualify student from taking the admission just because he lacks voters IDs.
The college can surely make it mandatory after giving admissions and ask the students to enroll themselves in the voters list. Also, college can ask their National Service Scheme (NSS) unit to undertake an awareness drive that will surely help students to increase the number of voters in their colleges.
This is surely a good move to encourage students to vote during election and be a part of the largest democracy in the world.
