As the world is gearing up to celebrate the International Yoga Day on June 21 by roping in celebrities, Bengaluru will witness two nonagenarians leading from the front and performing yoga asanas. Earlier in 2015, it was Shilpa Shetty and in 2016, it was Bipasha Basu who led the crowd.
Tao Porchon Lynch, 98 from New York and Amma Nannamal, 97 from Tamil Nadu are the guests who will set the benchmark for yoga practitioners on the third International Yoga Day that will be held at Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium.
Lynch is the world's oldest yoga teacher. She discovered yoga in 1926 in India when she was eight years old and studied with Shri Aurobindo. Se is also an acclaimed author who had participated in the Salt March along with Mahatma Gandhi.
Amman Nannammal is a yoga teacher and practitioner based in Coimbatore. She has taught yoga to more than a thousand students and was offered yoga instructor's job by many yoga federations all over the world, but she rejected them as she didn't know English. Now, around 600 of her students are yoga instructors teaching yoga around the world.
The government-sponsored programme will begin at 6.30am with Surya Namaskar and other asanas. As many as 5,000 yoga practitioners are expected to take part.
