On the occasion of 50th Anniversary of Automated Teller Machine (ATM), the world’s first ATM machine was turned gold. Also, a memorial plaque was added and a red carpet laid down for its users.
ATM was the idea of a Scottish inventor Shepherd-Barron and the first ATM was opened at Barclays Bank in Enfield in North London on June 27, 1967. English Actor Reg Varney was the first one to withdraw cash from the ATM. It has been fifty years now since the first cash machine. Now, there are about three million ATMs across the world of which about 70,000 are in United Kingdom (UK). As per reports, about 175 billion pounds were dispensed by the cash machines in the UK.
The most northerly machine in the world is at Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway. The one situated most southwards is at the McMurdo station at the South Pole.
Raheel Ahmed, Head of Customer Experience and Channels at Barclays said that even though the world is moving towards digital banking and card payments, cash is still an integral part of most people’s day to day lives.
The first ATM is also termed as the world’s first hole in the wall.
