The practice of triple talaq has been abolished in India, thanks to the Supreme Court verdict on Wednesday that termed it unconstitutional. It has come as a big relief for Muslim women whose lives became miserable due to the heinous practice of instant and irrevocable divorce - talaq –e-biddat where a man can legally divorce his wife by just uttering the word ‘talaq’ thrice.
The bench consisted of five judges belonging to different faiths who deliberated for three months before issuing the order.
Five brave women had taken their personal battle to court even though their families had tried to stop them from doing so. The lives of these women changed after hearing the three words. They decided to go against this unfair practice. Dozens of women’s organization supported them in the court battle.
This abhorrent law should have been outlawed long ago. The Supreme Court while declaring its verdict cited laws from 19 countries including Pakistan and Egypt which have abolished the practice.
Many people have praised the women who fought against triple talaq. Many more have welcomed this decision of the Supreme Court as it ensures equal rights of the spouses. It has been a historic day for Muslim women as the verdict is a step towards gender equality and women empowerment.
