The third International Yoga Day was celebrated all over the world today, with lakhs of practitioners gathering at numerous venues and performing Asanas together.
In India, inspite of rains the celebrations were led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and thousands of yoga enthusiasts at Lucknow's Ambedkar Sabha Sthal.
At the event, the Indian Prime Minister urged everyone "I welcome all yoga lovers present here and those performing yoga in various corners of the world. Today, yoga has become a part of so many lives. Yoga's popularity out of India is high and it has connected the world with India,".
"Yoga for Health", the theme for the third International Yoga Day 2017 highlights the benefits of exercise and health. The state health and family welfare minister, Pratap Jena discussed the role of yoga in keeping people mentally and physically healthy and stress-free.
In Ahmedabad, Yoga Guru Ramdev and BJP Chief Amit Shah motivated about 5 lakh people to present there early in the morning. PM Modi persuaded the United Nations in 2015 to declare June 21 International Yoga Day.
Other senior union ministers and celebrities also led yoga sessions in different parts of the country.
In Mumbai at the event in Worli, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with his wife Amruta and other celebrities practiced Yoga today.
Mumbai Celebrates Yoga Day which coincides with the Summer Solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere On Land, Ships and Submarines.
Officers of the Indian Navy held yoga events on board the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and at the naval dockyard in Mumbai.
In Odisha, sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik aims at spreading the message of peace and harmony through Yoga. He showcased a beautiful sand sculpture depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting in the 'Padmasana' posture.
Almost 180 countries across the world recognized the event of International Yoga Day.The United Nations headquarters in New York has been lit up with images of yoga postures by Actor Anupam Kher.On this occasion, he especially thanked Syed Akbaruddin, a permanent representative to the UN.
This is the first time that a yoga program was held on the iconic Great Wall of China by the Yoga enthusiasts practicing the asanas along with Amit Narang, deputy chief of mission at the Indian Embassy in Beijing. The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, a quasi-government organization, also participated in the event.
