The Indian Railways is on the edge of a significant transformation with the impending launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. This new train is set to revolutionize long-distance travel in India, offering passengers a comfortable and speedy journey with world-class amenities. The Vande Bharat Express, India's flagship semi-high-speed train, has already garnered widespread acclaim for its speed and modern features. The sleeper variant is set to take this experience to the next level, catering to passengers traveling long distances overnight.
Speed and Technological Advancements
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is designed to run at speeds ranging from 160 kmph to 240 kmph, although the initial operational speed will be 160 kmph. This marks a significant upgrade over existing premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi, which currently operate at maximum speeds of 130 kmph. The enhanced speed is made possible by advanced engineering, improved aerodynamics, and the use of lightweight materials in coach construction.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is being equipped with world-class facilities to ensure a comfortable journey for passengers. Features include spacious sleeper berths, modern restrooms, automatic doors, onboard Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information systems, and improved lighting and air conditioning. The interiors are being designed with a focus on aesthetics and ergonomics, drawing inspiration from international standards in high-speed rail travel. Additionally, safety features such as anti-collision technology and fire detection systems are being integrated to provide a secure travel environment.
Launch Timeline
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train is expected to hit the tracks by the end of July 2025. The government has set an ambitious target to roll out 30 such trains within the financial year 2025-26. The manufacturing of these trains is being undertaken by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bangalore and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Around 10 trains are ready at BEML, with several more in advanced stages of production at ICF.
Routes for Travel
Initially, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to operate on high-density routes such as Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai. These corridors have been prioritized due to their heavy passenger traffic and ongoing upgrades to railway infrastructure, including the installation of anti-collision devices and track modernization to support higher speeds. The exact routes and fare structures are currently under consideration by the Railway Board, with further announcements expected soon.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train represents a significant leap forward for Indian Railways, combining speed, safety, and comfort in a single package. As the first train prepares for its maiden journey, passengers across the country can look forward to a new standard in overnight rail travel. With continued innovation and investment, the Vande Bharat series is set to redefine the future of train journeys in India.
