On Sunday, Vadodara found a place in the Guinness book of World Records as over 5,000 people carrying brooms cleaned up the Akota-Dandia Bazaar Road, thus making a record for the maximum number of persons simultaneously cleaning a public place.
Earlier the record was held by Mexico when in February, this year, 1,767 persons had cleaned a public place. Vadodara's record was recognized by Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) and a certificate was given to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC).
Dr. Vinod Rao, municipal commissioner said that they had organized this event to spread awareness about cleanliness in the city and to encourage people to keep their city and surroundings clean. He stressed that although it is the duty of the VMC to keep the city clean, the citizens are also collectively responsible for the city's cleanliness.
Nearly 50,000 people witnessed this event. The citizens also pledged to keep the city clean in presence of Mayor Bharat Dangar and Vadodara MP Ranjan Bhatt. It is a matter of great pride for Vadodara that it was ranked in top ten among 434 cities and towns that were surveyed and ninth amongst the 72 cities with a million plus population. Rao said that this event was a celebration of that achievement.
